Christmas Island Emperor

Thanks Ted.
Here is one from tonight.

Emperors aren't found in Hawaii, although there is a few that have been spotted.... lol (they were released here)

Rufus didn't catch it, he ordered it from CXI lol

Streamers are all over Indo/philippines, Fiji, Vanuatu, etc. The only ones with NO streamers are CXI, Red sea and i think Africa (which sort of confirms my theory with the picture above)

Fiji is the most prevalent with streamers as XLRG sizes are cheaper to import (HUGE freight fees on big fish from Indonesia)

I only have experience with CXI and Marshalls emperors. I very seldom get other emperors at large sizes.

When I lived on Kauai in 1988-1989 I saw a Queen angel diving off Poipu...a very strange sight indeed...

You'd be surprised at what you see every once and a while. I saw a giant blue tang, there is a black tang in the bay, lemonpeels, flame angels etc. Nothing has a major breeding population and we already have lionfish so if a volitan or another species (all illegal) got introduced, i dont think it would wreak havoc like in FL

I dont want to hijack the thread but what are the tank size requirements for these.... ive seen anything from 120 gallons to over 300... And what about reef safe? i saw on this thread that zoas become some nice treat for them.... im upgrading to a 180 and want one if its possible... if not then ill stick with some pretty tang

Hey Brad, great looking fish - looks like it's thriving in your tank. Contarary to what "the808state" claims, I did collect that fish specifically at Randy's request for you. It was not, however, from Chistmas Island but from another south pacific locale a bit further west. Probably one of the few ever shipped out from there.

If you like your corals you may want to stay away from an Imp. Brains, Zoo's, and fleshy LPS are sometimes eaten by Imps, frogspawn, softies, SPS are usually okay, although I have had two very small Imps that had to go back to the store because they ate everything.

Emps get very large and a 180 is probably too small too hold one for its entire life. I currently have a 6 foot 150G and couldn't imagine a full grown Emp stuck in the tank, he would be very cramped.

Thanks Rufus,
He is definately thriving, and is very impressive for sure.
Next year when you are here in Utah skiing, you need to have Randy bring you over for a visit. I would love to finally meet you, and I think you would like the emperors new home.
Aloha.

Great story about a stunning fish! Thanks for sharing.

Fair enough... no emperor angel for me :(... thanks guys

Depending on rock work and other tank inhabitants, you could house an Emperor in a 180. I had one in my old 180 about 6 years ago. I had to get rid of it when it destroyed a majority of my LPS. It was a gorgeous fish that I got from the Diver's Den at LA and had the personality of a puppy dog. I am considering it in my current 180, but I don't know how my Powder Blue Tank would react to a newcomer :)
