* Click Here: Nominations NCPARS Elections

Ouch.

Ok, on another topic relating to the original post. Will the election nominations committee be asking to have bios and club goals posted by those running for elections? As a voter, I'd like to have more information on the candidates as to their backgrounds, what makes them a strong choice for the position and what their plans are for the organization. Can we possibly have something like that posted on our NCPARS website? I think it would be helpful and it would make us informed voters. As a Social Studies teacher, I would like to see some informed voters out there (including me.)

Also, is there a deadline for nominations as of yet?

i wish i could bring more to the table, but i do not know everybody in club .
But... i would like to say......
1. i think Brad would be a fine addition to the BOD as President
2. JonK would also get my backing for Public Affairs
3....and anyone already on the BOD that is willing to commit more time i would also back or anyone else in club wishing to fill the other positions and dedicate their time and effort
-just my 02 cents :)

EAGLES,
I think your first sentence says it all. I, too, do not know all of the people in the club. I know "of" some of the candidates, but I don't think that makes me an informed voter. I'd hate to just vote for the people that I have gotten to know. Just because you don't know a candidate does not mean they are not a great choice for the job.
In another organization that I belong to, candidates are asked to write a bio (some are long and some people are rather brief), a summary of what makes them qualified for the position (reef experience, NCPARS experience, experience in another organization in that position, etc would all be applicable) and then an explanation of any direction that you'd like to take the club in. Even with the people I know, I don't know that I could write that for them. I just don't know that I could vote in good faith without having more than a name to go off of. Am I alone here?
I also would like more information from the candidates that aren't posting in these forums. They seem to be an unheard voice.

their extending themselves enough, a essay is not needed - IMO

its my opinion that those two gentleman are stand up, helpful guys, so they deserve my vote, thats all......

*informed voters.....we can't do that for the president of the country, how are we going to accomplish it for our club :)

You'd vote for a President of our Country that you did not know their background? Yes, they may make promises that they don't keep, but at least they get to debate those promises in front of us.

I'm not asking for an autobiography, but a little information on all the candidates would certianly be helpful. Can you sit here and write up an info summary on all the candidates and their goals? Even the ones you are publicly supporting? How can you not vote for a person because you don't know them? If that's the case, we'd only elect and re-elect those already in office. Want to do that with the current White House administration?

no, i just personally take the presidency of our country a little more seriously :)

unless you can figure out a way to meet these people and simulate relations, i'll stick with voting for someone i know is a good person and trustworthy, rather than what someone writes as their stated goals whom i've never met to judge their character.

Sorry to the thread for this off shoot, here's to hoping our club continues to grow:beer:

"Also, is there a deadline for nominations as of yet?"

the noninations stop 10 days before the event but there is an open nonination at the event in case the someone running for president can run for another position and so on down the line.

Bios would be a great idea! I will set it up on Sunday for emailing me bios or a thread on NCPARS.org.

Thanks,

Rick

Sounds great!
Maybe you could post it on NCPARS.org since it is a more personal thing that all the candidates might not want the whole world reading. You could always link it from a post here.
Thanks Rick

i think what people know of me could be good enough, but i will answer anything i can.

my dad has always had saltwater tanks but never any corals and we thought buble algae was the coolest thing lol.and things happened that i had to "assume" my dad's tank(moved to fla)(job related) and one day i walked into the pet store and feel in love with xenia (of all things) and registered with r/c and meet zooqi and the rest is history from there. and i was invited to a coral swap at mo's house and that was the begining of the club we all have grown to love.i personally feel like a huge part of the heart of this club and i have been asked a few times by close friends to run for president and i really didn't want to but after the recent amounts of postings and questions from members i feel that i can handle the job i;m not saying that i will make the right decidations but with the help of a few others that i feel are part of the heart of this club we will agian get back on track to doing things like tank drillings and meetings after swaping is done.
managing a club can't be much different then managing a restauant (i have been doing that for 17 years)

i see the club getting bigger donations and more support from vendors to the point of getting great prices on products from the manufactors. i see donations going to help out school projects in some form(the present bod as talked about gathering equipment to form a full tank settup for a school) personally i would like that but i would also like to see something like that in a raffle.
i would like to see the club join masna. to open the door to what they have to offer(they help many clubs getting started and being a member of masna opens the door to the possiblity of ncpars hosting macna) which if memory serves me correct macna brings helps hosting club raise about $10,000(i could be wrong) and that would help many reefers in the long run.
don't get me wrong it's not about the money for me, i have said serveral times i don't care if someone makes a $5 donation or a $500 donation they should get the same treatment. but we have devoloped same good sponsorship packages that are greating followed up with better then in the past.

also i'd like to see more dyi projects go on weather it's at someone's home or at a swap.

i'm sure there will be other issuses i will need to address. but here is a good start.

Bio & Club Goals for nominees Rich & Kelly Rivera

We are both currently on the nomination slate for the BOD of NCPARS. We were both going to do separate Bios and Club goals but our backgrounds, beliefs and what we would like to see for the future of the club are so much the same we decided to do one post for the both of us.

We were both owners of an LFS which gave us the opportunity to acquire extensive education in the areas of coral propagation, care, husbandry and also the care of fish and invertebrates. Rich has done extensive work with coral propagation and also worked extensively with the repair and regrowth of damaged and "sick" corals and fish

We are both also very active in organizations that are related to the conservation of the oceans & reefs. We care deeply about the future of our oceans & reefs and that is what has leaded us to supporting Reef Nest that Mo has for the education of children. We feel very strongly that our children need to be educated not only on the reef keeping hobby but also to respect and conserve our oceans & reefs. We have donated livestock and dry goods to Reef Nest to support the work that Mo has done. We are also currently working towards finding Reef Nest support from local and national businesses that are in the reef industry and also other industries.

Kelly has been very active in the past with NCPARS, SVSEA and Reef Nest acquiring sponsors and donations for raffle items. She has built relationships with people and businesses in and outside of our hobby giving the opportunity for better things for the future of the club. She also has 15 years experience in business administration and management giving her the foundation needed to support and guide the club.

NCPARS has a lot of potential to be a great club. There is currently a great member base and a huge potential for an even greater member base all over the state of Pennsylvania and other surrounding states. NCPARS needs to be a club not only wanting members but to also welcome others whom share the same goals, values and ideas that the members of this club have. Our meetings and activities as a club should not be created to make money but to offer a time to offer ideas, show demonstrations, educate children as well as adults, trade corals & equipment and best of all make friends.

The following are the club goals that we both support and would push for if we were to be on the BOD:
1. Frag Swaps - At least 4 frag swaps per year. Each swap being at a different location giving the opportunity of attendance to members and others that may not like to travel long distances. We would like to see a swap held in the PSU/Williamsport area, Lehigh Valley area, Philly area, Lancaster/York area and possibly other areas depending on the requests from members and others interested in attending NCPARS swaps. The following are some ideas that we have that relate to frag swaps:
-Bigger raffles that include livestock, dry goods, gift certificates, etc.
-More door prizes for new members and children that are in the
hobby
-Club meetings at the beginning of each swap (this allows a better
opportunity for members, BOD and others to bring up topics, ideas,
etc. while everyone is present)
-More advertisement for club events
2. More Events - Group trips, bus trips, BBQs and any other event that maybe of availability. NCPARS needs to do more then just have frag swaps. NCPARS is more then just a club that meets to swap corals and have raffles. We are a club that consists of people that have a common interest and a group of people that are friends. We currently are able to offer NCPARS the opportunity to attend the Farm Show that is located in Harrisburg. This would give the club the opportunity to bring in more members, more hobbyists and to also show the area the importance and enjoyment of this hobby. We would also like to see more interaction between NCPARS and other clubs.
3. Education ââ"šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å“ NCPARS needs to support the idea of education. To do this we as a club need to support Reef Nest and other avenues that do the same. As a club we can offer help and support education through doing:
Sponsoring Reef Nest events
Going to schools/colleges on our own
Doing acts of conservation as a club
Becoming active on our clubââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s website to help newcomers in the hobby
Offering demonstrations at LFS and other clubââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s events
4. Relationship between BOD & members ââ"šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å“ There needs to be a good relationship between the BOD and the members of NCPARS. Notification of club status, events and decisions need to be done in a timely manner. We do realize that there are some situations that need to be kept private but there is also a lot of information regarding the club that needs to be announced to the members. All members should feel that they can contact the BOD and their situation, idea, etc. will be handled to the best of the BODââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s ability.
5. Sponsors ââ"šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å“ Support of our clubââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s sponsors needs to be done. We would like to see our sponsors more involved with our club and also see our club members be involved with our sponsors. Supporting our sponsors not only benefits them but also benefits us as hobbyists and consumers. We would like to also to see more sponsors offering demos and to attend meetings in person (when available) to allow attendees the opportunity to meet and ask questions.
6. NPO status ââ"šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å“ Utilize the benefits that the NPO has to offer the club. We canââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t hold a NPO status and not use it to our ability. There are many government grants and programs, both state and federal, that we as a club can use towards education and to benefit our members.

We both want to see this club grow and be able to use the experiences and education of the clubââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s current members and supporters for the good and future of the hobby. Keep us in mind when it comes time to vote for your next BOD.

Thank you for your time.

I just wanted to post something about the closed thread. I PMed back and forth with the RC staff member (mhurley) because I too thought it might be a board member because of his wording. He wouldn't tell me who posted it but at my request he agreed if I told him who the board was that he'd tell me if it was one of them.

I submitted the RC names of the BOD and according to him, none of them made that post.

While I am interested in helping the club out, and becoming a member - I'm not certain that I'm interested in an actual position on the board. What I proposed is that I would certainly help out in any way I could with any typing, clerical duties, etc.

To make myself more clear - I would be happy to help out the elected secretary, for example, if he/she is not interested in the actual "production" of materials (newsletters, minutes of meetings, etc.).

I hope that clarifies. While I did hold the position of "secretary" in the aquaria society club I was a member of back in my home country (Canada) several years back - I'm not eager to get into the politics and backstabbing that appears to be plaguing this club. (Ok - so I admit some of the posts I've seen here lately have scared me a little!)

Edited to add: I'm also very much a "newbie" where reefing is concerned. I've only had about five months' "experience" in this hobby. (The other 20+ years were in freshwater aquaria - with one brief marine fish only stint back in the days where liverock was considered the "ultimate" experience in reefing).

Thanks Sassyfish. I'm afraid I'm the one who took your name in vain and suggested (I think in another thread) that you might be interested in the secretary spot. Sorry about that. I mis-remembered what you said, I guess. The club can certainly use your help as a non-board supporter.

Normally we don't have the backstabbing and griping that's been going on here for the past month. I hope you'll come to the swap and meet some of the people in person you've been reading!

This has also been posted on ncpars.org
At the request of the nominee, Marlene (sassyfishy) will not be on the nomination slate for the Secretary position. She has offered her help to the club and the person who does take the Secretary position.

....what sassyfishy is saying she'll do is exactly the sort of thing a committee member would do. So we'll just have to keep that in mind as we form committees.

Thanks for volunteering Marlene..and don't worry about limited experience in reefkeeping.

Thanks, everyone. As I said, I'm quite interested in helping out however I can with any clerical type duties and I have plenty of time.

I'd just prefer it not be an actual elected position on the BOD. I don't feel I know enough about this club or the way things are handled here to positively contribute in that respect.

I would most definitely like to meet the people involved with this club, if for no other reason than to put a name to a face, and share experiences and learn!

I'm afraid I won't be able to attend the swap in May as it conflicts with vacation plans I've had for some time now, but I do hope there are more opportunities for club members to get together in the near future.
