Conditions for a Magnifica

From what I have read on here, Magnificas are being kept under a range of lighting conditions - 150-400 watt MH and some under LEDs. What about flow? Is the prevailing thought the more the merrier?
Also, one post I read stated that if you are going to have trouble with a gigantea, it usually starts at about 3 weeks -- is the same true for Mags or is it obvious sooner than that?

I am a new Mag owner and want to know how soon I can start to feel optimistic :)
Thanks

Mags can successfully be kept under MH, T-5s, and presumably LEDS, though I'm not that familiar with long-term success stories yet with the latter. As far as failing around the 3 week mark, I would say it typically begins sooner than that. If things are good at 3 weeks, I would say you have reason to feel optimistic.

Important parameters for mags: temp. 80-82, sg 1.026-1.027, nitrate preferably undetectable, good water flow (not as intense as gigantea seems to be fine).

+1. The sg may seem high, but that's what they like (1.025-1.027 is seawater, many just keeps their tanks lower). Gigs in particular could probably handle more since they are typically found in very shallow water.

To me, the difference between gigantea and magnifica are that mags show signs of sickness at the store -- they are partially deflated, aren't fully attached, are gaping, etc. Gigs on the other hand typically look "savable" meaning they look okay in the store. And once home, they inflate and deflate, giving the new owner a sense of hope once it's inflated, then desperation once it deflates.

All good points^

Both will do well with strong, indirect flow. No powerheads pointing right at it, but alternating dispersed/random flow.

Thanks for the input - I am still at the "less than a week" point but am feeling hopeful. I was mostly wondering whether I should add more flow, but will hold off since the nem seems happy right now.

If things continue to go well I'll try for a thread with pictures :)

I had my mag in a 75 with 6x54W T5 lighting. Good ATI and/or Geissemann bulbs. Very mature tank. Perculas went right for it, abandoning the BTA they were hosting in.

Very healthy mag for quite a while, though it moved all over the place in annoying fashion. It's also the only nem I've had that ever gave me a skin reaction (haven't experienced a carpet nem yet). Gloves solved this but every so often when cleaning the tank it would actually grab my arm if I got too close.

Took the percs out and replaced them with GSM's. The nem started to deteriorate a bit as the GSM's didn't take to it. Put it in the new Percula tank but that didn't have great lighting so it diminished a bit. I sold it and the percs to someone who had good lighting.

Here is a Video of Mine . I to was wondering about the flow . Mine love all the flow Hope this help . Please post a video of your Nem

How long have you had this anemone? The tentacles seem a little short, and that is a Lot of flow. Too much in my opinion but the Mag can probably handle it. It looks like it's getting a lot of direct streams when ideally it should be getting indirect flow. try bounching the water off rocks and walls instead of aiming it so close to the anemone. Also, how often are you feeding, and what's your lighting?

I have had the Nem for 3 Months and my lights are 6x54 wat ATI bulbs and i feed it every other day and on the off days it get food from when i feed the Fish in my tank I Think im going to Move some power heads tonight and see how that goes . I am now thinking the reason they look short could be because it is to much Flow . What do you think

...yes if it weren't happy it would've moved already. The thing is they're found in various locations and depths on the reef. Oe size fits all, it has to have this much of or this or that is a good guide line, thats all. I also don't see any problem with its tentacle length, looks nice, healthy too:)

It's perfectly ok, you can highjack all you want :)

I will say your flow is a LOT higher than mine, my anemone's tentacles are not being whipped around like yours are.

I have the nem on a rock pile and there are 2 Koralia's pointed in the general direction of the nem - one is a 1050 and the other a 750. Each is located about 12-15 inches away from the nem in opposite directions. I picked up another 1050 over the weekend and was considering switching that out for the 750 if I wanted to up the flow a bit. And if I really wanted a ton of flow, I could have all three going.

I've never tried posting a video, but I've taken plenty of pictures :)

I think I am going to keep the same flow just point it some place else and see what happens .

I have a first gen MP10 sitting around somewhere, sounds like maybe I should dust that off and add it to the mix.....
