Coral Tank from Canada (1350gal Display Tank) - split

Hi Peter. Your tank is one that inspired my 320 SPS build and I appreciate your contributions and videos. I am glad that you are moving into the Apex. I have quite a complex set up and it has been solid for several years. I work as a System Engineer for a global company so please let me know if you need any help with the set-up. You can view my graphs, configuration and source code realtime@ http://www.reeftronics.net/tdb/apex-status. There are several best practices like the utilization of virtual ports and naming conventions.

On the AEFW note there is a new product that claims to get the AEFW eggs. Reefers locally are testing it. It is called RPS ALL OUT Dip and apparently has some type of aloe Vera composition that penetrates the membrane of the eggs killing the FW fetus. I don't think AEFW will destroy your SPS as I have read that the corals eventually build up and immunity but eradicating them will be a challenge. Perhaps you can get frags of all of your colonies once the SPS quarantine system is in place.

Best Regards, Tom

Thank you very much Tom. Your link is very helpful and welcome. My experience so far is substantially more positive than the GHL Profilux. Everything works as advertised and the learning curve is significantly less steep. I have focused on the two new tanks and everything appears to be working well. We are going to set up a day to do a complete calibration of the system to raise our confidence in the numbers. I am probably going to dump the GHL Profilux equipment and replace it with the Apex on the main display tank now that I have so much more access and confidence in the system.

Interesting comments on the AEFW. Thank you for that. I will keep and eye out and discuss with Mr. Wilson how we might use this information in our quarantine procedures.

Thanks for dropping by Tom...........

Peter

Wow!!! after reading this thread and the previous split, i am speechless! Congrats Nineball and Mr. Wilson. Although you are battling an infestation now, the success of this aquarium has overcome it. Many blessings to you both and best of luck. You are truly inspirational to anyone in this hobby.

Thank you for your generous praise. The infestation has abated and we are moving into a period of renewal for the display tank. I am very pleased with the progress. We will be documenting it for the thread in the near future......

Thats great news Peter! Im wishing you the best and keep those updates coming. Your videos are great as well! My wife and I really enjoy them. Its been a pleasure.

Best regards, Erwin.

That is the best news I have heard lately. Congrats on the eradication of the AEFW. Looking for big things in the future for your tank Peter.

I was thinking I should write you today to find out how things are going: I had a small tank (29) that was infected with the flats. It was small enough to bomb with EXIT but was still very difficult to keep the tank from crashing due to mass death of the worms and to keep from missing a few and the problem re-blooming. I an hardly phatom the issues the giant system pose using any plan to rid the system

I hope you have finally turned the corner for good with this pest and can get back to enjoying this great hobby.

hello

I have a question when you used the aquarium started mangrove, still use it.

you recommend for an aquarium using mangroves, chaeto or biopellet?

Good to hear about the victory Peter! I also understood we can not only expect changes on the population, but also a significant upgrade of the equipment?

Can't wait to see how things turned out.

Wow this is a long thread, I once was up to date, but have dropped off :(
I also would like to know about your mangroves. When did you put them in and how tall are they now? Thanks! Tank is looking great!

I'm not sure of the exact date that these mangroves went in but it been at least a year if not a year and a half. The trees are between 3 and 5 feet tall and very healthy. I'm pretty sure they like the plasma lights I have over them.

Peter

I do not doubt that I am far under lighting them but can not afford the plasma or m/h
we have t-5 which does okay but much slower growth than you are getting. The up side is the root mass we are hoping for is coming in and providing some neat surface area for all sorts of little critters.

so far we have not had good luck with the seahorses in the mangroves. We get loads of babies but none live more than a few days even with all the target feeding and advice from experienced keepers

I think/hope that as the system matures that there will be enough wild foods among the roots to bridge the gap between what we are giving the fry verses what they are missing and we can not put a finger on

congrats on beating the worms: I never doubted it could be done just sad it had to take so long and so much effort to achieve

can't wait to see/hear about the turn around

Peter,

I do not have a saltwater aquarium, nor have I ever had one. In doing research on other freshwater projects I stumbled upon ChingChai's thread, and then yours and have read both in their entirety. I am extremely impressed and humbled by your dedication (and ChingChai's!) to his hobby and the community as a whole. Not only are you taking incredible steps to provide an optimal environment in every way, I feel you are also contributing to the preservation of natural reefs all over the world with the research you are doing in your home. I have a feeling your best practices approach will be used for generations to come in tanks big and small.

Thank you for your dedication and immense contribution in information that you have documented in this thread. The resources (money and man hours) you have applied to this project is mind boggling in itself. Thank you for sharing this journey and I look forward to reading more about this project and where it takes you and us fortunate viewers.

I don't plan on having a reef tank myself anytime soon, but I would work for free if I had a chance to work around your aquarium and fish room. I'd sweep the floor for a chance to work around it.

I can't go to bed (its midnight) without thanking you for such an eloquent and positive review of this project. If you have taken the time and energy to read both Chingchai's and my threads you are to be congratulated for your accomplishment. I too have read each and every page of Chingchai's thread and firmly believe it is one of the best sources of information for the serious hobbyist on the web.

I believe Chingchai would agree with my position that our mutual success is very much a product of this community and the mutual support everyone has unselfishly provided throughout our respective builds. Thanks again for your positive comments and support. It is really appreciated and not taken for granted.

Peter

This thread has been a stop and go adventure from the beginning. I would attribute that to the incredible amount of thought and planning that goes into each and every step. As they say in this hobby, nothing good every happens fast. Take your time Peter, make the best decisions you can with as much thought and careful planning as you need. The best practices are careful, planned, and concise practices. Thank you for your efforts to show us all such a wonderful example of this hobby.
