I am so fascinated by this build! The wealth of information is invaluable & your commitment to best practices is astounding. It just keeps us all coming back for more! I really admire the fact that you have chosen to 'staff your weakness' with such quality experts...

On that note, welcome Chago - I've learned alot about water in the last couple of pages and look forward to more wisdom in the days to come. :)

New resident for the tank........

New resident for the tank........

This was a gift from one of our community (Slammin) for the Bonzai section of our reef. It is really neat and different. Anyone know anything about it???

Hi Peter,

Thank you very much for your generosity and hospitality. My wife and I were in awe of the amount of detail that went into the creation of your tank. It is truly a work of art. Thanks again taking the time out for us and giving us a detailed walk through.

The coral is called Parazoanthus sp. it is closely related to the commonly found yellow polyps (parazoanthus gracilis). Other than that, i honestly don;t know too much about it other than it is not as commonly seen locally and it would be perfect for your unique tank!

When we replaced the filters 3 weeks ago, the TDS after the Merlin unit was 4, and water out after resin tank was zero. I have been averaging about 5 months between filter changes. I found that flushing 2 or 3 gallons of RO water out of the Merlin before running it through the DI tank extends the life of resin by more than a month.

I agree. I've been using this unit for a few years and it works flawlessly. Plumbed it right into the water line. No booster pump necessary. Auto shut off too. You can add DI to get zero readings.

Ditto, welcome Chago to the build. Hoping he can bridge the commercial to hobby gap and also help us with smaller systems build the best RO/DI that we can for our fish and corals!

Sara, yesterday while meeting with Peter and Mr. Wilson, Mr. wilson made a comment about a piece of commercial systems which he does not like. He didn't really say he didn't want it, he just expressed he wish it could be improved. Then I was up all night rolling around thinking, I know there is something better. Then all the threads yesterday about all the members on here who are using higher capactiy RO units and are interested in it. Then now I read your post about bridging commercial to hobby. I like that.

I called Peter and told him... change of plans. That ready made commercial unit will not cut it for your tank. Peters fish room has pumps all over the place running and you don't hear a hummmm. No way am I going to be the one to ruin that ambience with a booster pump system. So I am going to custom build a system for Peter. I will keep everyone in the loop as I go along. And yes Sara I hope my little invention will bridge the gap between commercial - hobby - residential. Our hobby is somewhere in the middle between commercial and residential.

As for everyones warm welcome, thank you so much and I am honoured to be apart of such a epic build. Even such a small part as source water is a great feeling. I have been fortunate enough to see Peters tank in person (twice). It is unreal..... and pictures do it no justice. Peter thank you for bringing me on and I am excited to begin.

Ken.... don't worry I have not forgotten about you. Ken ideally you need to first find out if your area requires water softeners. I am going to bet that Orangeville does. Your only a few kms north of me and Orangeville does pull from wells so its a pretty good chance its hard. First thing you need is a water softener.

As for a RODI, how much water are you needing? how large is your tank?

Thank you, that's fantastic news and I can't wait to see this part evolve!

may i ask why a softener is needed or what it does??

in Lubbock Texas, we pull from aqua furs and the water is really hard. and 1/2 the houses use softeners and the other half doesn't.
what does it do for RO units?
(my LFS uses one)

Cougarman, the Goodwin mention you was replacing his DI every 600 gallons. That means that the Merlin is not running perfectly. The Merlins issue is TDS creep. No no no TDS creep isn't crust building up like salt creep, TDS creep is an up and down TDS reading from water coming out. Those of you who have a Merlin. Leave it off for a day. Then turn it on and the first drop of water I want you to test with a TDS before the DI. I promise you it will be higher. Merlins technology requires the unit to run a little first before you use the water. So if your using auto top off and the water stops for a few hours. Then all of a sudden it starts, your DI is going to get punished with high TDS. End of the day your getting 0TDS in your tank thanks to the DI, but your going through DI like nuts. A decent DI should not last 600 gallons more like 5000 gallons. Here is an article from a site on this unit.

Again I am not bashing this unit. It is better then a simple home unit. But it isn't the best and has lots of things that need improvement. I personally would not own one.

I agree Sara, this focus on setting the foundation for water purity can't help but benefit us all. One more step bringing us all closer to best practices.

Now I have my todo list to fuss with.........

Install new and improved sump with Mr. Wilson's design.
Bring RK2 Skimmer (aka Robbie the robot)on line.
Add skimmers and reactors to the Wilson Bars (AKA Mars Bars)
Add Led lights to the Wilson Coral Bar.
Continue testing and qualifing lighting systems for the Display tank.
find fish room girl
Design, equip and establish hospital tank.
Establish live food production environment for specialty fishes and display tank.
Determine fish and coral dietary requirements.
Introduce veterinary consultant to thread community.
Create media package for take away after tours.
Present award to the first Grand Master Aquarist.
Arrange Christmas open house for RC thread folks who have contributed.
Demonstrate the two web cams for the display tank and fish room.

There's more but I have to feed the fish first.........

I run 2 or 3 gallons through Merlin before it is directed through the DI tank. Tis really extends the life of the DI. I'm getting at least 5 to 6 thousand gallons of good water before I change out the filters & resin.

Quick Tank Update

Quick Tank Update

We are running a bunch of temp equipment destined for the Wilson Bars in the main display tank temp sump to break it in and get a sense of management before we jump into full production. I think its working well as far as water quality and clarity goes. I just took these fast so I apologize for the quality.

More in a bit...........

It is incredible what you guys have been able to do. I hope to someday have the patience to create my own dream tank. :)

sorry I used your name but I ment aquinas.

So your not using a auto top off system? auto top off would allow that high TDS into the DI. Like I said before what works for one does not work for all.

I can see how that would happen. I have a 110 gallon RO storage tank that my tanks are topped off from.

It looks like it might be a type of sea lettuce. I am not sure of that though, wasn't able to find any pictures. If it is sea lettuce, tangs are supposed to eat it.. might be worth letting it grow a little more and seeing what it turns in to.

Have you started the Mangrove Forest yet?
