Cryptocaryon Irritans - tank transfer method

ie, would I need to buy:

1x HOB filter
1x 2.5G tank
1x 50W heater
or, 2x 2.5G tanks?

Halo, you don't need the HOB filter. I'd recommend a simple airpump with some airline tubing and an airstone. Get a bunch of airstones for cheap and discard the airstone after each transfer and your set to go.

Also, I've done the 1:10 bleach water solution for sterilizing. Just swoosh the solution around real well. No need to let the solution sit in the tank for a while. Rinse VERY well. Let dry.

Personally, the minimum tank size I'd do with two clowns is (2) 5 gallon tanks or buckets. A 2.5 gallon tank seems a little crowded for 2 clowns even if it is temporary.

Also, when I do TT, I do at least a 30-50% water change between transfers. Yes, this goes through a bit more salt, but that's how I like to keep the ammonia away. Works great. When I've done TT, I only do it on 2 fish max at a time.

Can someone tell me if this is right? I'm getting confused with the days/transfers I need

Moved fish to transfer tank#1 on 4/5
Transferred fish to tank #2 on 4/8
Transfer fish to tank #1 on 4/11
Transfer fish to tank #2 on 4/14
Transfer fish to tank #1 on 4/17
on 4/20 move fish to fallow DT.

Do I have one to many transfers? The DT has been fallow for about 11 weeks and know the fish have no other diseases.

Thank you! Fortunately, I don't think my clown has ich so I'm observing and might treat with prazi. Thanks.

That's good news! As a side note, I use TTM on all new fish additions and always treat with Prazi as well. Part of my standard QT protocol.

How are you getting a clean tank and filter established every 3-4 days?

Unless you overload and overfeed your transfer tanks, you really don't have to establish anything. I used Prime every 1-2 days in my transfer tanks, fed lightly, and saw no ammonia throughout the process each time I used it on a fish. Outside of cleaning the tanks between transfers (as well as using new bubble stones and tubing in each tank if you go that route), the only thing you really need to stay on top of is salinity, IMO, and using plexiglass covers on the 10g tanks I used did just that. Not once did I have to top off the tanks during TTM.

You have the correct # of transfers. 12 days should pass from the start date, so 4/5 + 12 = 4/17 as you have. (you aren't really "transferring" the fish in the first day, you are introducing the fish, which may be where it is looking like 5 transfers rather than 4)

Wouldn't hurt to keep them in the final transfer for an additional couple weeks at minimum to observe them. TT only rids Ich, not other nasties. 2-4 more weeks is a small price to pay.

No smaller than a 10g, but I would do a 20g as may be necessary to control ammonia too. what type of fish are they so we can ensure compatibility?

I had 3 flame wrasse in 10g for TTM, but they were compatible.

What's the smallest tanks I could get by with for 4 fish, the biggest being just shy of 2"

I'm going on my 3rd transfer with 5 fish in a 10gallon. So far no ammonia detected in each stay but I do use Prime.

I've done tt many times. When using newly mixed and aged salt water'; not the water from the main tank which has a lot of degradeable material in it ,I never had ammonia more than .25 show up in the 3 days and athat low amount culd be testing noise . I do sometimes add a little ammonia detoxifier on day 2 just in case.

Question if you don't mind, I'm currently doing the tank transfer method and this morning (8am) was supposed to be my 4th and final tank transfer. However due to a little emergency, I wasn't able to do the transfer and I also forgot to turn the QT light off last night .... So because the whole reason TTM works is because we transfer in the morning when ICH has left the fish.... Does this mean I screwed everything up?

Or do I just leave the light on as if it was a LONG day, then turn it off tonight and do my 4th and final tank transfer method tomorow morning at 8am?

After that my fish will go in another sterile tank where I will treat with prazipro and finally in the DT it goes....

Time of day.

I would just do the transfer on time, plus or minus one day isn't that significant at the very end.

By "on time", do you mean today at 8-9am? which will be on the 5th morning not 4th morning? Also is leaving the light on over night for this last transfer going to screw up with the ICH cycle or light isn't an issue?

The morning part has very little to do with the ich life cycle. It just happens that most (but not all by any means) parasites drop off the fish while the fish is calm like they are when sleeping. The parasites will still drop off whenever they feel like it.

The only rule you need to ensure is that you do the transfers prior to the known life cycle limit that says the cysts take a minimum of 72 hours to 'hatch'. With a little bit of buffer for how long it takes for a cyst to form in the first place, you are playing with fire if you do a transfer more than 75 hours after the last transfer. My personal limit is 73 hours.

What Spar is saying is correct. While there are timing issues in certain parts of the CI life cycle, they have no impact on TT as an eliminator of cryptocaryon irritans since it is protomont maturation we are preventing. The shortest period for that is 72 hours with the majority of the time it taking longer. If you miss the 72 hour window, simply do an extra cycle to be sure. Oh, and light is irrelevant to this part of the life cycle.

Thanks for clearing that up guys! Much appreciated.

This morning I transferred the fish over. Because I was late, I will be doing an extra transfer Tuesday morning. Then on Friday morning the fish will be put in the final QT for prazipro treatment.
