Cryptocaryon Irritans - tank transfer method

Number of fish does not matter for TTM, but 12 fish in even a 20g is way over pushing it from an ammonia perspective. Even if they are all small fish.

Ammonia would be my least concern - if needed you can always do daily transfers or do it every other day. Daily water changes would be another option.

Of more concern is potential aggression among so many fish in confined quarters. Even if they all got along before, in a barren tank and stressed out they may start fights.

Those are great points. I think I'll do it in small batches. Thanks for the input.

I have an unexpectant trip I have to take towards the end of my TT that will cause me to exceed 72 hours on the last transfer (that goes into the cycled QT). Would I need to start all over or could I just add another transfer prior to the transfer into the cycled QT?

I'm doing ttm right now. I think it's hard to avoid dropping some water to the next transfer tank when the fishes are transferring over.
Will that little old water be a problem on the next transfer tank?
How do you avoid tansferring the old water when you use a plastic container to move the fishes?

Add another transfer. Do not exceed 72 hours.

I think a small amount of water is ok. The life form you are worried about is encysted on something solid.

Exceed by how long?

If more than 6 hours you risk a therront hatching and attaching to a fish. This means you will have to start TTM from the start. Adding just a 5th/additional transfer won't allow time for the trophont to drop off the fish.

This.

With TTM there should be no stages of concern in the actual water column. Technically you could use all the same water (but don't)... you just can't use any of the same equipment or glass.

It will probably be around 8-9 hours. I thought the last transfer was just an extra precaution anyways? If I have to start over anyways, should I just scrap the current TT and wait until I get back?

technically all of the trophonts should have jumped off the fish by the end of the 7th day. therefore if you did a transfer on the 8th or 9th day already then you should be fine. i just personally don't like chancing it, but each person has their own risk tolerance. i have done a final transfer on the 11th day and trusted it, but that is my extent.

could you do one more just prior to leaving on your trip? how many total TTM days would that make?

Yeah, I would leave on day 10 and would return 80-81 hours later, on day 13.

Ya your call on this. In theory you'd be good to go.

Even 80-81 hours later is in the far reaches of the safe zone. Just do that final transfer when you get home and you will have hedged your risk even further.

Thank you. Still trying to determine my risk tolerance. It's not like I'm going to dump this fish into the DT right away - still has 4 weeks of observation in the cycled QT, so I may do TTM again.

repeating TTM is no different from the observation period anyway. i did this once with a bunch of Tang's that i just wasn't 100% on if TTM worked or not. so i just repeated TTM and adding on a couple more weeks of observation afterwards. as long as you don't mind the labor of the transfers. i feel like it helps me bond with my new fish :love2:

Hello,
Is it possible to do the TTM with invertebrates? I'm guessing doing the 12 days phases would kill any cyst attached to them?
I don't want to go as far as six weeks with snails and crabs. :D

Thank you.

TTM only works on fish. Because the encysted phase can last up to 72 days, that period is the recommended quarantine length for invertebrates.

Hi,
I never did the TTM before and going to try it on my new marine FO tank.
what if i'm doing the TTM in a fully darked room? it's a room that i store my aquarium stuff and have the QT tank. will i still have to count the hour of the day or is it changed by the room light hours ? and if so, i can change the transfer hours from 06:00AM to say 09:00AM, right ?
