Cully's 120 build

Bending over, head down in a 30 gallon tank filled with aquarium silicone fumes is quite a way to get your Sundee mornin' revved up in a hurry! :fun5:

Are you linking your rock together at all? I like to drill with a masonry bit and link it together with acrylic rod. Makes for really cool formations that don't fall.

I've tried that. Everything I've tried to lock them together eventually fails. So I just rely on stack & balance.

How much space did you allow for in between the baffles? I was thinking of 1" However, I don't know if I will be able to get my fat hands in there it silicone after the first baffle.

Do you have a mock-up of some sort of what the sump design is going to be? I'm curious to see where you're going with it.

I'm going for a design similar to this, but I'm only going to have one 7" filter sock. Then the skimmer will sit next to it. Then 4 baffles/bubble traps into the return section.

So instead of 2 big holes, just one hole, and a little compartment for the drain pipes.

Not sure if this helps. The plate with cut out circle is a rough job, looking for an acrylic fabricator to make a nice plate with hole cut out.

How do you plan on incorporating the shoes into the design, and are you sure that they are reef safe? The zebra galoshes looks menacing...

Thanks that does help. I need to redo my sump (need baffles, and probably a filter sock)... this looks right up my alley.

That was Pascals old sump so the shoes, including the zebra striped ones, are his. I think he uses them for bacterial culture.

The acrylic ring is where I'm hung up. The ones in Pascals old sump are custom by Avast Marine. I've made one but it's not pretty, though it would function fine. I want something prettier so I'm talking with Avast now about making my sock holder. Not sure about cost just yet.

Pretty sure my dad did his with something similar to a home made compass. A post as a center and a string with some sort of acrylic cutting bit or blade on the other end. Just spun it around the center post and etched out the acrylic until the cut was complete. His circles are perfect, pretty, and cheap.

Another option is to buy acrylic on Amazon and a circle cutter like this one (random pick - not endorsing the product at the link): http://www.amazon.com/General-Tools...qid=1387282818&sr=8-12&keywords=circle+cutter

I bought a cutter to do 4" socks which I never did - it wont do 7" socks though.

I actually saw it on one of the first episodes of "Tanked", then saw it in action at Pascals/Blurrys and said, "yep!, must have!"
