Sump Version 4.0

Sump Version 4.0

Got the baffles in and drilled the newly designed, SINGLE sump, 40B. Silicone still drying. Probably wait until next weekend for the swap out.

Finished critter-proofing the custom overflow box with Gutter Guard and some zips. Had to put some tiny zip anchor holes around the trim and center brace. Left the zips in front a little slack in case they need to be snipped for access.

OOOOH and I forgot. Got the 2 MP40s mounted on back wall in random reef crest. Not sure its what ill go with long term, but its working for now. Me likey!!!

Added some live LR to the dried reincarnated rock from my old system. Aquascape is basically complete. Added some dried aragonite for effect. Maybe 40# total. So far, no ammonia spike. Not sure I'll see one with non-live rock and once piece of fresh cured LR to seed.

Might be good to go in a short period of time. Can't seem to get a decent shot of it with the camera. Trying to procure temporary lighting until the hood gets its fans and pendants in place.

Finally some signs of life. Starting to see teeny pods on the glass. My first tank was started with cured rock at quite an initial expense. This is the first time I've ever started and cycled from scratch in 7 years. Its like watching paint dry!

Thats awesome to hear Mark. You've been a patient guy.
I like the approach you took in questioning everything from return pumps and fittings to recreating live rock.
If I ever get around to upgrading ,Ill be following suit.Nice to see your nearing completetion, goodluck with the fun stuff now.

Thanks Steve. I'd forgotten how exciting the anticipation could be. Pressing my nose up against the glass every night. Shining a flashlight in the tank at night, looking for any sign of life.

Nitrites took a major dip today and nitrates are rearing their head. Shouldn't be long now! System needs a few tweaks. Still need to put the new sump in to replace the temporary one. I'd love to get some fish in there to entertain the kiddies and my wife. Still wont put corals in for a while. Ned to go slow with those.......

Got the temporary sump out and the new permanent 40B sump in. 4th time's a charm...

No comments on the plumbing run please...

The vibration and noise from the Snapper is much less than the Mag 18 I was using temporarily. So is the wattage, while the flow is much greater. Again, note the 40A durometer FDA food safe padding under the return pump and the skimmer.

What was "other question"?

Probably be a few pieces of LR in refugium. I've got like 60# of dried "reincarnated" rock to work with.

Had the electrician run a dedicated 20A line just under the tank with built in GFCI

Completed the waterchange, emergency drain system. Bulkhead in back corner of sump:

Runs through the wall

Into the laundry room behind the tank. It runs along the wall behind the washer and dryer into the cabinet of the laundry utility sink where the RO unit is housed

This sits across from the RO and Saltwater mixing vat. RO line runs under the floor and up to the vats.

Plan is to shut off the upper ball valve that goes to the barbed hose adaptor. Water will be siphoned off into a bucket with a line on it that runs to the bulkhead that empties out of the sump and into the house plumbing

Then, close the down ball valve and open the upper one. Connect hose from saltwater vat's Mag 18 and fill the sump with fresh SW. I'll do it remotely with a series of extensions and a powerstrip so I can watch the sump fill and turn the snapper back on in a time appropriate fashion.

Here's the underneath the floor plumbing. No, it isn't code and yes there is a gate valve to prevent backflow.

comin' at ya

where the sink, RO drain, FW and SW Vat's emergency overflow drain, and sump empty all together into one 1.5" drain

That's awesome Mark!

Love the "waterchange ease" concept here and plan on incorporating something similar in my build.

I had a long time to think about it. I'm sure I'll still manage to get water all over the living room...

The pick in the loooong run "coming at you" is where the emergency overflow from the mixing vats runs under the floor and "t's" in with the sink drain.

I put bulkhead and float valves in the RO and SW buckets.

She can bust my balls all she wants. Can't rush bacteria. It'll be ready when it's ready.

I want you to remember this when you're taking your vows. Has D forgiven you for leaving the dog gate open yet?
