Cupramine dosing and testing

Tonight I started using Cupramine in my 75 gal QT. The tank is just pvc sections, bioballs, bio wheels and a couple peices of Marineland "cut it yourself" filter pad.

I dosed 7mL of Cupramine as directed for my first half dose. After testing with a brand new Salifert copper test its showing 0.

Any ideas? Do I keep dosing until something shows up on the test?

Yeah,always use a test kit made by the same mfg as the copper. There are many forms of copper and each really needs a different kit. Cupramine's directions are very accurate, so your dose should be right on. Also, Cupramine has quite a bit of leeway between "effective" and toxic". you should be fine until you get the right test kit.

What makes you say that? Besides Hypo is ONLY good for ich so unless you are positive it is ich hypo could be a waste of time and make things worse by not properly treating.

Turns out it was just crappy lighting in my bedroom. I retested and took it into the other room and could see it just fine.

I agree to disagree I have dosed flame angels over 3 weeks (to get to proper level)using cupramine to .5 and to say it did not turn out well. With any medication any fish can react differently just like humans when we take meds.

Angels are especially sensitive to copper. Cupramine is supposed to be easier on them but can still be touchy.

Too high...I've killed several fish at that level. I prefer long low dose instead.

I dont have any personal experience treating angels with copper, but i've always read that the preferred treatment for Angels is copper.

Dwarf Angels are quite sensitive to copper, especially Flames. Just call SeaChem, mfg of Cupramine and ask their Tech support treating any specific fish with copper. Their tech people are great. I'm a big fan of Cupramine and use it on all new fish in QT. A great think about Cupramine is the wide range between effective and toxic. You can use a minimal dose on Flames, etc., and it still does the job.

I've used Mardel Coppersafe, Seachem Cupramine, and Copper Sulfate on both dwarf and large angles, haven't lost one yet.....

I agree completely. I think it would be almost impossible to find a fish that hadn't been treated with copper somewhere between the reef and your tank. Collectors, shippers, online dealers, wholesalers, and many LFS use it routinely. Hypo is said to be less stressful on fish. Maybe maybe not; but copper is less stressful on me. IMO & IME:Safe, easy, predictable, and effective.

Just did my second half dose. So far everyone is doing fine and still eating like pigs.

Now that you have that second dose in there, it's time to start testing 2X a day, once in the morning, once in the evening. Dose accordingly and maintain the concentration in the therapeutic range of 0.5-0.7 ppm. If you do it properly, you should be home free in a few short weeks.
