what does that starfish feed on? you sure it doesn't feed on sponges or tunicates?

He feeds on algae films on the glass, skims the top of the water, and sometimes i find him on the rock or squeezed under/around the base of a rock. I've never seen him eat sponges. When my sponges die they start losing tissue from the tips.

Dennis, sweet reef! I've "borrowed" your stand design for my own - hopefully the finished product turns out half as decent as yours.

Amazing pictures too - I always look forward to seeing more.

i have also borrowed the tank stand for my year 12 woodwork major project. im going to add frosted glass windows in the doors though, and add a white wood edging.

your tank and stand are incredible. but to be honest i was a bit sad to see your using sponges and filter feeders instead of SPS system. but great tank!

Looks great as always Dennis. I actually like the uniqueness of the macros and sponges; something you don't see everyday. Sorry if I missed it but what are you using for lighting in the refugium? and do you find it sufficient for growth in the macros? Thanks and keep pics coming... I really like how you use DOF in your fish and coral shots.

Thanks! haha, i've had so many people inquire about the stand design.

Thanks! Good luck with the project. I want to see it when you're done!
I always prefer a mixed reef so I've got a little bit of everything in there. This was also one of the reasons I went with this light fixture with the single 250w XM10k bulb. Lots of par in the center of the tank and then lots of shadow areas around the sides.

Right now I'm just using a cheap home depot shop light with a GE 6500k bulb. The red macro is brand new so we'll see how it does. But the chaeto grows well. I do get a little nuisance algae in there but it may be from lack of flow. I don't have any additional flow in the sump.

Everything looks great, even more so considering the photography skills.

I have to wonder, though, how the longevity of the sponges are? Will they slowly die or are they good for years? Same goes with the gorgonians.

What has been your experience/understanding from TBS so far?

The sponges tend to be short lived and you enjoy them while you can. I have some that have lasted since setup (about 10 months now), I have some that i lost after 6 months, and others I lost pretty quickly. Besides not being able to expose them to air, I don't really know how much things like flow and light play a part. I know they need fairly high flow, but how much is enough and can there be too much? And I try to put things in the tank like phyto and other things but who knows. The brown gorgs have been doing great and the big purple one i had was as well, until my tank water got too hot when the ac went out for a week. I think that also affected a couple of the sponges.

It will be interesting to see if any of these new sponges do better or worse now that the tank is more mature.

I was thinking of doing a SPS cube for my next tank build, but I just read this thread from page 1 and I think it might have changed my mind. I may go get some of this gorgeous Tampa Bay rock. Sure, it's doesn't have amazing rare pieces of SPS or anything like that, but seeing this tank just makes me think "Ocean" Can't beat that effect.

Do both! TBS rock with amazing SPS!

Here's a shot of a couple of newer members of my tank.

d2mini:

Im about to start a 48x48x24 cube and haven't decided yet on the lighting, with your experience on the 36" cube what would you recommend me if I was going LPS, and softie dominated with a small amount of SPS?

Mines only 36x36 but i'm loving my single 250w MH and four 24" t5 bulbs for extra blue.
My sps are doing well in the middle and upper half of the tank and my lps and softies doing well lower and around the sides. I think you'd want to maybe look for a 36" fixture though for that sized tank. With two MH. At 24" the 250w would be plenty. Same depth as mine.

Dennis,

Your tank is looking really good, it really is a job well done.

After a few months of using your litermeter 3 for water changes, how is the stability on the salinity? Do you like it?

Thanks!

Thanks! :)

The water change system is awesome. It took a little tweaking in the beginning but it's been super stable ever since.
