d2mini's "Essential Focus" Mixed Reef Build

For my mission to get more fish in the tank, I've had these two guys under observation since Monday.

Gold Spotted Rabbitfish and Midnight Clownfish

Always wanted to have a midnight clown...

Yeah, I've been eyeballing them for months myself, but never pull the trigger due to lack of any color.
But I finally gave in. lol

Glad you did. I think there's something about completely solid colored fish, especially solid black or white, that's really striking, since most everything in our tanks is neon yellow or red and such.

Hey Dennis, I saw your video on the net about growing jam packed macro in your sump to try the triton method. How is that going for you? Are you still not harvesting it? Not even some?

I think I mentioned earlier. The refugium crashed, and now I'm dosing nitrates.

Speaking of my refugium...

The good news is the macros seem to be doing ok again, even the new cheato ball seems to be at least hanging on.
The bad news is all the HA and other junk mixed in.
Since this tank has been nothing but one big experiment, I'm trying out Fluconazol to try to kill the nuisance algae.
Reports so far is that it doesn't kill the macros. We'll see.
Cutting back the fuge light from 8 hours to 3 hours, carbon is off line and cup is off the skimmer for the next few days.
Will update if I see any change.

And then for the brown dinos snot showing up in the display,
I plan on picking up a bottle of Fauna Marin's DinoX tomorrow. :uzi:
Die Die DIE!!!

Dennis - As good as your tank and previous tanks have looked, it's somewhat comforting to know you're dealing with the annoyances of this hobby like the rest of us. ☺️

I think you just missed the annoying stuff. :D
My last tank had a mini crash at one point, lost a lot of my sps colonies.
Then later I battled blue clove polyps.
It also had AEFW, but luckily a kind that could be killed off by chemicals.
My current nano tank has had every color cyano, as well as red flatworms and is now battling bryopsis.

So no... it hasn't been all roses. But I do try to nip stuff in the bud as quick as I can. ;)

From the video you made it looked like your macro was so densely packed that light could not possibly penetrate to all of it. I was thinking that A huge die off of the algae would be expected at some point. The Triton method may not need harvesting for the sake of nutrient removal but you may have to trim back once it gets packed like that again. The nitrate dosing helps but light is a must long term. Happy experimenting!

Yep, die off was expected at some point, especially down below where it wouldn't be getting light, and some die off can be beneficial, kind of like natural carbon dosing.
What wasn't expected was a complete crash with the inability to keep anything alive.
It seems lack of any detectable nitrate was the problem there.

ORA's new "Stellar Stylo" going in the tank.
Gonna be a beauty some day!

Love the corals... hate the $%&$!*$%*&#^#@ plugs! :uzi:

I very rarely keep any frag plug and don't even keep the encrusting base on new frags I buy. A fresh cut, I've found, encrusts onto my rock work faster as compared to letting the original base grow off the plug onto the rock.

Yep, many times I break the coral right off the plug. 100% of the time if it's not encrusted.
But this one was encrusting really nice over the plug and at ORA's prices I didn't want to ruin it.

I'm new to dealing with coral frags... do you chop just the base of the plug, or the whole plug from the base of the coral? How do you mount them in your tank if it's just a stick?
