d2mini's "Essential Focus" Mixed Reef Build

Yeah, 0 nitrates could be over rated. Could be**** WWC who has awesome pieces say eye keep their n03 between 10-20. Seems to work for them....

Nitrates holding steady at 5 ppm. Thinking around 2mm per day of the stump remover solution is about right.

Meanwhile.... here's the first coral shot of 2017. :)

Hey D2 quick question on the radion spread at height, If the tank is narrower (talking 18 wide and high) is the extra height still recommended or will it just be wasted spill

I would say just play with it and see what works over your tank. :)

Hi Dennis, just finished reading the previous tank thread and this one ( it was allot of reading!! ) Great tanks and fantastic information. You mention the low nitrates could cause the algae, I have similar algae but it's my p04 which has been undetectable for months, think it could be similar issue? Thanks for all the reading.

Thank you. :)
Are you dosing Triton Elements?
In my case I'm trying to get nitrates up to feed the cheato and other macros so they grow and and consume the other nutrients that Triton doses to feed the algae bed.
That's the only reason we're thinking that the undectable nitrates could be the problem. And even that is a guess right now.
po4 is a litte more difficult. Some believe that getting low readings could be misleading if you have nuisance algae that is feeding on the po4.
I don't know how I feel about that idea... I've had extremely high po4 and not much algae in the display.

Oh I didn't realise triton added elements for algae growth. No not triton for me, just macro and skimmer with water changes and base elements dosed. My algae is brown and only visible with lights on. I don't think it's enough to hide high phosphate plus I have added GFO previously with out change. My nitrates are at 5-7 so I'm trying to bring that down to get in balance with 0 P04 to see if it's a balance thing. But I think it dino :thumbdown

Dennis,

Can you give me your details on your stock solution on the Potassium Nitrate? I use 1/4 tsp : 423mL of RODI. I am up to 50mL / day which is enough to raise my nitrates by 1ppm per day and I still read zero.

I'm just wondering your solution strength and how much you are dosing to keep nitrates at 5ppm?

Oh, and another bit of bad luck it seems... my beautiful male Lyretail Anthia decided to stop eating this week. He was coming out when I put food in but would just look at it and then go back to a tree sponge he was hanging out in. No visual sign of disease. And he is now hiding in the rocks, not coming out for food at all.
I can't get him out... i think his days are numbered.

I've had that happen to a couple of my anthias from a school of four I've had for a few years. No idea what freaks them out to not want to eat. I have found that fish eggs helps a bit, but in the end I onlu have 2 remaining. Can't even add more due to aggression the remaining 2 show. Best of luck to you man!

Maybe that was the issue, the aggression of the other two

Purely because of a spectracide thread I was following. :)
What can you tell me about one vs the other?

not much at this point as I have just started reading about the two. I do know that with kno3 you could overdose potassium and cause problems but other than that, that's all I know.

yea, I too dose kno3. my only concern would be overdosing k, but if I can stay diligent and use my redsea test kit, I might be alright.

Good point.
I'll test my potassium again tonite.

Hmmm I always have low nitrates. Maybe I should dose stump remover and kill two birds with one stone. Nitrates and Potassium.
