d2mini's "Essential Focus" Mixed Reef Build

This pic is this morning.
Nona (our kitteh) is all "wth?" Can you find her?

Lower right, along side the door. Almost blends in 100%.

Sorry to hear about the losses and change. While I think the various methods of additives may be the right direction in the future I always fall back to the basics and simple approach. Tank, skimmer, lots of live rock and sand. Keep my hands out of the tank has much has possible. Keep corals that align to my tank maintenance routine and lazy reefer personality and that is it.

You have a great handle on things and pay attention to detail. Keep up the good work and make the best of it if you can. All the best to you and yours.

Sorry about your tank Dennis, it was a beautiful tank.

After my near crash and having to dose stump remover, last week I stopped the triton system too. Everything is looking much better now but I suspect I will lose a big Red Dragon colony.

Sorry Dennis! I always hate to see this happen. When it happened to me last time, I had to get out for a while. Not suggesting you do that. Just that I know the feeling.

My new tank has been setup to be super simple and go back to what works for me. Skimmer, strong and proven light, strong flow and a reverse daylight chaeto ball. I'm done dosing 99 products and chasing things.

Bummer. Props to you for sharing something no-one wants to share.

It would be interesting to hear what you learned from your Triton experience. What do you consider its pluses and minuses?

It seems like the testing was very accurate. But the lag time of getting the results back, means it was accurate __ number of days ago. Also, the nature of getting recommendations from someone nowhere near my actual tank would be hard for this control freak to follow, especially if they ran counter to my own inclinations.

Anyway, best of luck with the restart!

Oh man that's awful to hear. Sucks to lose fish. Just have to come back better than ever now

It's hard to beat a masterflex driven calrx with a nice big skimmer. The KISS method hasn't failed many people that I know of. Sorry to hear you have to reboot but hope it brings positive results for you.
True dat.

Thanks. And you found her. Checking out the empty sump. lol

It's not just us, either.
I know of a very famous reefer who started up the same Elos tank just before I did, set up as a Triton tank and he too has gotten out of it and gone back to other methods.

Never once thought of getting out. But spent a while thinking if I wanted to keep waiting it out or just suck it up and restart.

That super sucks Dennis. Good luck with the reboot.
Thanks

Kinda hard to say what I thought were positives because in actuality, maybe they are not.
What sold me on it in the first place was how the system was based around a large refugium for nutrient export.
And after that, i found the idea that some of the algae slow decomposing at certain times would be like natural carbon dosing pretty interesting.
Easy dosing, fuge removing nutrients and at the same time feeding the tank.
Unfortunately, it didn't play out that way. Once nutrients dropped too low (my fault), the entire fuge gave up the ghost.
All downhill from there.

They are supposed to be working on a new facility in LA so results will be quicker.
I'm still waiting on my last test i sent in 10 days ago.

Sorry to hear this Dennis.
Sometimes newer is not better in all cases.
Thanks!

Sad turn of events Dennis. I give you mad props for trying something new. I am a chicken, I will always stay with what I know.

Holy shizle!
I couldn't believe it when I saw the tank empty..
Man you got energy. I'm so lazy I probably would have ridden out the issues.. probably to my tank's demise.
Nice work.
So, since you did a bleaching and everything, you will go with all new rock and sand? Do you worry about transferring something back with the corals? It'll be a radically different chemical makeup this time... maybe not a concern..
Good luck!

Damn, sorry to see this! I saw your post on Marsh and wondered
What happened.

Very interested to see what you do next. Having just started trying to keep coral and sps specifically I was following along with your tank. Makes me wonder about triton nom. You are way more experienced than I am.

Hey D2,
Sorry to hear about your restart but I think you did the right thing. I tried a few of those dosing methods before and aside from the cost I found a lot of them highly ineffective. I found that the redsea colorup program worked the best for me because I dosed it whenever I felt like or remembered.

On my new tank I have a dosing system that will run like every other day dosing some trace elements mixed and diluted with RO water. The base supplements will come from a calcium reactor that I'm shopping for.

I have tried large fuges before and aside from becoming a maintenance mess I never truly believed they did anything other than a ton of pods.

Holy crap,

I almost fell off my chair when I saw the empty tank pic upon opening this thread. My first thought was you were setting up an amazing frag tank. Then i realized it was the Elos....Good luck with the reboot.

that sucks man, sorry to hear.

Is there anything equipment wise or setup wise you are thinking you might do this go round that you missed after you had the setup done the first time?

Yeah, and at 12' of head it's still rated for 1200 gph.
I'd say the these are the two pumps that are top of my list right now if I was to get a replacement.

But I have emails into both ecotech and elos to see what they have to say.
Elos says their Quiet Drain's "ideal flow" is 1000-1500 gph.
And they have their own dc pumps... like the Elos SF 6000 & 1100.

Any choice on return yet? Was set on the Echotech for my 120g till your review, now thinking about pulling the trigger on the Current USA eFlux.

I don't blame you for starting over. Losing all your fish sucks big time. :(
Thanks!
Dennis, I am sorry to hear you had to start over. Thank you for sharing. Can't wait to watch your tank start over. Good luck!

Marty
Thank you

haha, yeah well... I like to tinker with new stuff.

The more I reef the more the KISS principle comes true. Keep it simple, stupid.
Yep, true. In some ways I thought this was pretty simple. hmmm

Holy shizle!

haha yeah... the last two days was a bear. But I'm done and ready to add rock and sand.
I'm not worried about the coral. I think the sand is the worst if I had to guess. Easy place for dinos to hide.
And I hear they hate fresh water, let alone bleach.
With the few success stories I heard, all sand was replaced.

Sorry Dennis. :(
Thanks bud.

If my fuge never crashed, might have still been going ok.

I've always liked my large refugiums. With strong light, the chaeto grows like mad and keeps my nutrients down.
My favorite is Julian Sprung's fuge... that sucker is so cool.
It's a whole other display tank, but it really filters the tank.
Look it up if you have a chance. There's some youtube video of it. :)

Thanks. Wish I was setting up a frag tank!

that sucks man, sorry to hear.

Well with Triton I needed a specific style sump.
Look for a change on that front in the not so distant future.
For now I'll continue to dose two part (ESV Bionic) but will eventually go back to a CaRx.

Back burner. The L1 is fine for now. But VERY interested in the new Sicce pumps coming out.
