*d2mini's new 200g Reeftastic Build*

Yeah I was always skeptical about that with the gyre. I never could figure out why it would handle rock structures any better than any other pump. You throw a ton of rock in there and the gyre flow is going to get significantly interrupted.

My alternating pair of Gyres work really well, but my tank is is only 5' long. It is wider at 3', but it seems to get the whole water column moving pretty well. I think tank length has a lot to do with it. I hear much past 6' and the XF150 can't really hack it.

Yep, at the 6' mark the flow reduces quite a bit. I have my return on the opposite end of my gyre to help with that area.

Sounds like you should try a 170 before throwing in the towel...

The flow is awesome in my 4'. At 50% it clears all the sand out of the opposite end... sand is 3-5mm grain size so not really small

I can't really put my finger on it.
Obviously the opposite end of the tank doesn't have the flow that the end does near the Gyre.
But the end near the Gyre has Cyano all over the sand bed. No idea what that's about. And the water returning to the Gyre is hitting my hammer coral pretty hard. This coral is just off the sand bed in that same area.
And when I turkey basted off the rocks, i had some areas that were fairly clean, but some areas that had TONS of detritus.

If the Gyre had the quality of the vortechs or tunzes, and were as easy to clean, i might be more apt to pick up a second. But as it is, I dunno.

I have had mine out once to clean and it wasn't too bad. You just have to use firm but precise movements. If you try to get rough with them, I could easily see them breaking or having issues. Mine aren't really getting that dirty though and I don't have the dwarf ceriths that others are having issues with... They are on the edges of my tank and I think my eurobrace is shading them just enough to keep the coralline at bay. Time will tell I guess :) And once my calcium reactor is online, I am sure it will have something to say about that too!

lol... Might the "cheep piece of junk" Jebao pumps be the answer to this amazing beautiful all high end build?!? We shall see... We shall see...

That would be interesting to see all the jebao haters come out of the woodwork if you ran one of there pumps. I love mine. For the price you can't beat it.

My jebaos had all the ecotech wave modes and more for 1/5 - 1/4 the price :)

dennis last question on the fuge light.....how hot does it run? do you feel it adds some heat to the water?
It's definitely warm, similar to a lower wattage MH.

Never will a cheap chinese knock off touch my reef. ;)

With an extra cable ($15), the Tunze stream pumps are fully programmable by my Profilux, nothing extra to buy. Going to try one of those just to see how I like them. Never had one. Plus their build quality, performance and customer service get stellar reviews.

Hey Dennis it was nice meeting u yesterday at FJW and also seeing the tank I got my inspiration from in person. The old cube was definitely a nice setup.

Tunze pumps will be a great match for your tank :). The Jebaos don't seem to last more than a year - I have had three of them fail on me. All purchased at different times but failed after 12 months of usage.

I have Tunzes that are almost 10 years old and still run like new. I have replaced the prop, but that is nothing.

I want to see the new APEX pumps coming out in the fall.

Cool, good to know. Thanks!
I was looking at my software and it's pretty detailed. I can make groups of pumps, different kinds of waves, different currents... looks pretty interesting.

The good news is the cyano I was experiencing on the sand bed in one area of the tank seems to have cleared up.

Your build is extraordinary, thank you for taking all the time to document your journey so well. I have been out of the hobby for a few years (parted out a 150), just bought a new home with way more room than I need. Which means room for a tank. I am in the planning stages with a summer build being the goal. I will reference your thread multiple times over the coming months......Great Job man, and good luck with the continued success of your system.
