*d2mini's new 200g Reeftastic Build*

I have a couple 6105s I'm not using (and the Apex connectors) if you're interested. I've also got two 6095s.

Basically new, only used for about 4 months. I've got some sea sweeps to go with them, and I'm in Houston. :-)

Your build is extraordinary, thank you for taking all the time to document your journey so well. I have been out of the hobby for a few years (parted out a 150), just bought a new home with way more room than I need. Which means room for a tank. I am in the planning stages with a summer build being the goal. I will reference your thread multiple times over the coming months......Great Job man, and good luck with the continued success of your system.
Thank you very much!
And best of luck with your new build as well. :)

Interrresssting. ;)
I'll let you know if I need anything.
I have also been thinking of doing Sea Swirls on my returns, it just wasn't a priority when getting everything running initially. But that's why I didn't go fully coast to coast with the overflow.

Sounds awesome. The sea sweeps are for the pumps, though, not the return. They rotate about 90 degrees every minute, and combined with the 6205 housings I have, made a super wide relatively gentle flow.

Finally got the Mangrove Tank set up.
It's the last piece of the puzzle!
Plumbing is now DONE!

Specs:
Glass Cages 18x18x16 tall.
24 lbs of Walt Smith's Fiji Mud
60 lbs of Caribsea Special Grade Arag-Alive Sand
200w Fluorescent with Daylight Spectrum bulb
I happened to have this fixture from my previous build. Will eventually look for something a little smaller/cooler.
4 Red Mangroves
2 Banggai Cardinals

My goal is to have at least one good tree going.
The Banggai Cardinals will go in tonight along with one of my giant red brittle stars.
And that will finally empty the holding tub!

Laying in the mud...

Finished plumbing and filled with water.
Ended up with 7-8" of substrate at the tallest area.

It's not the prettiest setup with the plumbing and overflow but it's in the fish room.
I just want a bigass tree like Julian Sprung! :D
But I was going for more of a planted tank look and didn't want 6" or more of nasty substrate up agains the front glass.

These propagules are always so short. Might end up having to float them for a bit until i get some strong roots.
We'll see how it goes.

Super cool Dennis. I have been wanting to have a mangrove tank as part of my last and current systems. Maybe after I add the frag tank I can get the wife to approve another tank in the living room and make it work.

Thanks, I always liked mangroves.
They don't really do anything for nutrient reduction, they're just kinda cool. Like a bonsai tree. :)

Didnt you save any of your groves from your last fuge build?
No, two reasons.

1) Didn't really have anywhere to put while rebuilding
2) I made the mistake of leaving them floating for too long. All energy went to the root growth which caused them to start declining at about a year old. They also got completely covered in hair algae in the old fuge.

Decided to just start over.

Awesome, I like the use of the sand shovel to scoop the mud!

How are you liking the Lifereef media reactors? They look easy to change media -- are they?

This is a great re-build. When do we get an updated full shot of the fish room (and annotated like the last build)?

My daughter let me borrow her shovel. ;)

Haven't changed media yet but seems pretty simple.
Just unscrew the union at the top, pull the canister out of the water and let drain, then turn upside down so you can remove the plastic screen and sponge. Then from there you empty and rinse like any other reactor before refilling and installing back in the sump.

I guess I'll have to get to work on a new pic and schematic of the fish room. :D

How much nutrients do they filter out?
The mangroves? Figure on an immeasurable amount.
You would need a whole forest of them to make a dent in your nutrient levels.
They grow wayyyy too slowly.

Man.. that mud looks thick! Lol. This should turn out pretty cool, if all goes well you should have something really special to share with all of us.

Yeah, that's some dense stuff!
I ended up going back in and mixing it up a bit with the sand.
Created a huge mess, looked like a the black lagoon, had to drain the water, refill, realize there was a thick layer of black soot all along the low points, drain again, scoop that soot out, add a little more large particle substrate on top, and refill. Looks good again! lol

Neat, how does that overflow work? What is it?
It's a LifeReef.

Works awesome. Always restarts, never loses siphon. And I didn't have to bother drilling. Have the identical one on the frag tank.

That pic of cardinals and mangroves is awesome!

I'll take a picture of a mangrove forest tomorrow morning when I walk down to the sailboat :)

Got my floralux lamp today Dennis!! I love the lighter that they include with it. My wife was a little confused since I don't smoke and it was for the fish tank lol!
