DanW's 187 SPS Dominated Reef Journal

Hello Mikey...

I use Reef Booster, Bio Digest and Bioptim. Picked up the Bioptim from a friend that decided to stop using Prodibio. When the Biotim runs out I'll likely switch to vodka for the carbon source. I'm not sure what you mean about a calcium supplement but I don't use Prodibio's CalciReef if that's what you're asking. I run a calcium reactor and if my prameters are off I add whatever two part is required to reach my targets. I buy the two part ingredients from BRS.

Hi Dan,
why do you wanna switch from biotim to vodka for a carbon source?

Hey Dan,
that was what i was asking (if you used CalciReef) Im sorry i was not clear on that. I think im going to use a two part and i wanted to make sure there were really no issues.

Nice wrasses. Hope you have better luck with the rhomboids this time around. My trio are doing well so far. I've found that they don't do well with meds for some reason.

Very nice Dan. Good luck with your new wrasses. I will enjoy from a far :)
Thanks Mark, keeping my fingers crossed.

Holy monkey......missed happy Friday lol.... Lovely new stock there DanW and I am also enjoying you tank from far (literally) ;)
Tanks Tahir, I've not had much luck with rhomboids so I'll take all I can get

Me too Kenny, me too. They didn't seem to mind the Prazi but they didn't like Cupramine last time so I didn't use it this time, no sign of ick anyway. As we discussed, I wish I coulda got a few females but I still very happy with what I was able to get my paws on.

Hey Mike, thanks for stopping in.

My feeling is that a carbon source is a carbon source therefore I should be able to substitute vodka for Bioptim, since vodka is much cheaper I'll go with vodka on the rocks. Although I have no data to back that up I have previously substituted with no issues or reduction of effectiveness.

No worries man, just wanted to be sure that I answered your question correctly but yeah, I've not had or have I heard of anyone have issues with this combo. I think you're good. How have you been supplementing?

Nice wrasses!

Do you have any pictures of them in your isolation containers in the main display? I've been interested in doing this in the future.

How's the kalk reactor project going?

Thanks Patrick. Unfortunately I lost one of the female flames in iso this morning. Woke up and one had passed :sad1: She was pretty small and did not have very good coloring so I did have a bad feeling about her. The other wrasses have been set free and seem to be doing fine. I saw my male flame displaying the female today...awesome

I'll try to get a pic of how I rigged the hatchery (link) this week sometime. I used fishing line and it actually sits upside down at the top of the tank. The kalk seems to be doing fine but I'm pretty sure either it's not saturated or I'm not adding enough as my PH probe doesn't move when the kalk is dosed. I dose in my sump and the probe is in the same section...still taking it slow...very slow.

in the past all i have done was just use a two part cal/alk additive. But my corals were not looking like what yours do, or have that type of growth.

Honestly Mikey I'm like a blind squirrel finding acorns with these things every once in a while I just get lucky.

(psst Photoshop)

Glad that you trapped the fish sometimes that is a PITA project. I'm sure this doesn't have to be said but take a bunch of pictures of LA/DD. I'm jealous that you guys get to see the facility, have fun.

Gary was in charge of photos this time around, so I'll let you know where he posts them. He was concentrating his efforts on a SPS display in the coral farm and also Kevin's NPS tank in his office.

FINALLY it's Friday...Happy pre-turkey day Friday :wavehand:
