10 dollar pumps sign me up:)

I just wanted to make sure that if I were to get one that the pumps would be obsolete and me be outa luck.

Where are you getting replacement pumps for 10 dollars?
oops that is $110. I held the shift down too long....

petorama sells them online

I have been running a DAS EX-2 on my 65 gallon SPS tank since October, I only have three small little fish in the tank and the skimmer still manages to pull out alot of stink. I ran it with a feed pump for a few months and they plumbed it into my overflow. The downside, it is to powerfull for my tank and IMO has caused the colors in my SPS to fade due to lack of nutrients.

So what's a guy to do. I am upgrading to 180 gallon system with a few more fish.

Yeah, I notced my SPS colored up too when I added more fish (and of course fed heavier). I added a flock of fairy wrasses, and the colors shot through the roof! My GARF bonsai never looked so rich. I suppose thats what you have to do though... feed more! An ex-2 on a 65g is quite overkill though.

Thats why I pinched myself and got the ex-1 for my tank.

It has been doing great so far. I have to empty it every two days.

overkill is an understatment, did I mention that I only have two small percs and a hog wrasse about the size of my pinky!

I can't wait to see what it pulls out when I get the upgrade up and running.

So whats your total water voulume on your tank 80gl.

I ave a 75gl with a total of about 95gl.....would the EX1 be a good match for it??

Here are the results from the meshmod on the DAS pump.

Bouncing around 10 LPM and settling on it. It does not bounce much at all, and is a very consistant and even flow. Seems like the meter itslef restricts it some as well, as I can see the level change slightly when it is applied, so I would guess it is just a bit higher than 10 LPM.

You can see it skimming away in the background, wet for now, even before the supposed "break in" needed for the meshmods. I have 4 layers on it. I also put larger air tubing on it.

This is more air than this skimmer will ever need, a riser on the neck would be nice IMO, I am thinking about it....

What is the LPM with the stock impeller?

I was getting more like 7-8 LPM stock. But that was with different airline tubing that was very hard to connect to the meter, I think it was inaccurate..

At this point I am finding the extra air to be pointless, this skimmer runs best at about 400 LPH and the level set right around where the chamber meets the black flange.

When I increase the air it overflows, and the highest setting is way to much. Either it needs to break in or I would need a riser on it.

Lowering the level in the skimmer (to an inch below the flange to compensate for the extra air and not overflow) does not help. It does not create as good of skimate so far. I think theres is to much turbulence in contact with the fine bubbles and they are not making it up to the neck. Or at least this is what I am guessing, becuase the small bubbles seem to not make it up into the neck (they are visible at the top of the chamber) and larger bubbles are in the neck. This is just not creating as good of foam, even though much more air is in the skimmer and the pump is pushing less water. Maybe someone with more experience can jump in here, but so far the extra 200 or more LPH is useless... Ss for bubble quality, I really can not say, both seemed very good, but it is pretty awesome right now.... I think the mod was worth it but I have no real long term observation to say much.

I have much more playing with it to do.

In the end, this this ran just as good out of the box IMO.

Well, DAS skimmers are at the high end as far as lph of air per cross sectional area of body. 1000lph of air on a 6" body is at the upper end of what a 6" body can take really (EX-2), and some even consider that too much. So you really are 'overloading' the skimmer. The taller neck would help greatly, but perhaps some other method of bubble-management for all the turbulence inside.

This is great news for all those running Aquabees on the Aqua-Euro skimmers though. Two or three of these modded pumps on a 10" round body would be great!

I just wish there was a way to buy regular aquabee pumps w/o the needlewheels. I tried to get finsreef to get some for sale... but the thread was left cold after I suggested it.

How would you recommend other methods of management? I was thinking maybe the "bubble plate" I have read about by using the needle point plastic stuff? I actually have some, that stuff is great for all kinds of DIY stuff...

Any ideas? A riser would be awesome, but seemingly hard to adapt without just the right parts. I'll have to think about it.. having the level up near the flange seems to be a must on this skimmer right now and I am dying to slap a riser on and crank it up.

I am not certain but DAS might be able to custom make a riser tube. Tell me how big you would make it and what ex model you have and I will call DAS and see if they could get one made.

That would be awesome, I am thinking 2.5" taller than stock. Maybe 3". It is an EX-1.

Otherwise, I will have to find the right size acrylic tube. It will all be new for me, so I don't really know the best way to approach it, and need to read up on some similar projects.

Thanks for the help!
