Dave's 1st Gig - Purple

Dave,
The color of you anemone is very nice, green, purple, pink. Is that from the LED or the anemone actually have a very rare combination of color like that?

The whiter pics are under just whites.

If you see any blues its likely pics I took with the blue lights on.

Sadly the gig shriveled up today.
Almost all the way into its foot.
I'm not sure what happened, but it sure didnt seem happy.

Hey brother, can you tell me what your dosing and how much now? Water changes and salinity, etc.?

What lights, schedule, and intensity.

That gig was doing well. We need to figure out what happened.

Sometimes it just happens, but I have a feeling that this was triggered by something he didn't like.

Just been doing water changes at least once a day. Sometimes more. I suction out the junk when I see it. Keeping lights about 10 percent.

It was doing fine and I had changed nothing that I know of other than the light intensity and duration.

Lights = LED
shortened the period from about 10 am to about 7

Been dosing cipro. 500 mg.
it's in a ten gallon tank.

So I'm not sure.
:(

After looking better for a bit yesterday. The nem continues to worsen.
I'm having thoughts of either changing antibiotics or adding the nem to my DT for stable water quality.
Any thoughts?

It's not looking good, though it could bounce back. I would switch to Septra. Typically if the nem doesn't improve after a few days with one antibiotic, I will switch to the other. Your nem looks like it's been in a somewhat steady decline rather than showing a marked improvement.

Make sure that you do 100% water changes. I recently found it to be essential to removing any pollutants from the QT. It seems that the nems like fresh salt water and seem to perk up after water changes.

I would keep the nem in QT. It still needs treatment, and just because the DT may have stable water quality, the antibiotics are what's going to make a difference at this point. Plus, if you have clowns in your DT, they'll probably bother it rather than helping it recover. And, if the nem continues to decline, it's easier to remove the nem from QT than risk it fowling up your DT.

I've been doing 100% water changes 2 times a day since it has been looking bad.
I have even been drying the tank out before adding new water.

I will give the Septra a go.
Is it 250 or 500 milligrams per 10 gallons?

Hmmm... maybe Orion can expand upon this, but I'm wondering if water changes 2x a day is too much. Were you adding Cipro at each water change? If not, it may be that the antibiotic didn't have time to work before it was flushed out.

For Septra, it's one 800/160 tablet per 10 gallons.

I don't think changing 100% of the water anytime will hurt. Last treatment, I did 100% water change twice a day at least 2 or 3 days. I just add the full dose medication after water change.
If you use septra, use the Septra DS tablet per 10 gal. (Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole 160 mg-800 mg). If you Septra (or Septra SS is 80mg-400mg) then use 2 tabs. I just add it when I change water. Lately, with the last treatment, I just change 100% each water change. I did not do any 50% water change. I do use DT water so I dont have to heat the water up prior to change.

I mean that if the antibiotic wasn't added each time after the water change, would the infection have time to take over the anemone? I thought about doing 2x water changes a day, and let the nem rest in clean water without the antibiotic, but then I thought the infection would come back in the time the nem was in fresh water.

I didn't do any 50% water changes either. It felt like the results were better. But in my case, it looks like 3 out of the 4 nems are going to make it and the treatment was the same for all of them.

I agree 100%. Keep him in the HT and switch to Septra.

Also, like mentioned above, they seem to love the fresh water changes.

I'm treating 3 right now.

Oh man, not so good, it was doing well. Make sure when you add the medicines to water it's during a dark time. If you're doing 2x water changes a day and adding the tablet during a time that the lights are on, you're significantly reducing it's effectiveness. You might already know this, but I thought I would throw it out there, just in case.

just another random thought but is 10% enough lighting for him? I know Jared has cycled his lights on and off in intervals when he has had some bad ones, and light is another key component to getting these things back healthy and keeping them there. Maybe you're starving him with light intensity?

After every water change I added Cypro. 500 mg.
I lowered the light to 10% after it closed when I increased it.

When I got home last night it had detached and was upside down in the QT.
I really thought it was dead.
But it seemed to "retract" some when I touched it.
So I took the anemone out, temporarily added it to one of my displays ( I have a 60 and 180 tied to same sump) and left it there for a few hours.

It opened and looked better but never attached.
Meanwhile I took my whole quarantine system apart. Gave all the equipment and the tank a good rinsing in the sink.
I dried everything thoroughly and added 10 gallons of water from my system.

I then added one tablet of this: Aquarium Antibiotics Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim 400/80mg-Qty 50, Pharma Grade.

I turned the light off and left it alone for the evening.
It looked like it was inflated pretty well this morning.
I plan to turn the light back on at lunch today.
And possibly do another water change.
I'll take some pics then.

I wont' be convinced of any improvement until it stays inflated for a whole day.
Not sure it has yet.

Thanks for the help and kind words.
Interesting experience so far.
I hope I can keep the animal alive and give it a nice home.
