Deeznutz Hd 120 Shallow rimless (Pics)

Thank you for the reply!

Glad everything has been getting along nicely! I am hoping to see if a slightly shorter but wider tank will work with tangs as well, but I won't be adjusting tank sizes because of this. Tangs will be on the lower end of my stocking list and would only be a bonus if the tank dimensions are appropriate for them. Hope when I finally make the investment into a new tank things will work out as yours has.

Why would you want to go deeper? because of livestock choices?

Always an exciting time when you get the green light to order a new custom tank :) Take your time and make the right decision.
When I say deeper, I mean from front to back(2"). It gives you a bit more sand bed to play with. I like to keep my lps and zoos on the sand bed. I under estimated my collection of zoos and lps lol.

The main reason for the tank dimensions was entirely for the room it was going in and I wanted tangs. Ideally a bit deeper and with an external overflow would have been better, but it would have pushed the tank out another 8" from the wall etc etc.

Really pretty tank! I love that you didn't sacrifice the aesthetics of the room for the tank.

I have a 60 gal set up similar to your tank and I had a ridiculous hair algae problem. I could scrub the rocks and they would be completely covered in a week. I even had it trying to grow on my substrate. Long story short, I did a bunch of reading and decided to try a remote deep sand bed. The hair algae disappeared completely in 4 weeks and hasn't returned. I feed my fish a lot and even dump extra food in the sump for the pods. Also, I do not own a skimmer. A RDSB was a cheap solution for nutrient export for me. I don't know if you have room for one, but thought I would share.

Hope this helps. I'll be following this thread.

Thank you for the advice ;)
I had a RDSB in my last set up. I didn't plan on setting one up in this set-up but I've been contemplating it lately. I have a fairly large fish room beneath the tank. So there is room for expansion. You can back track and see the construction of it in this thread :)

Hair algae is almost completely gone, just a few patches behind the rock work.
I'm going to do another wc and replace my go and carbon this weekend :uzi:

Small update

Hello all, it's been quite some time since my last update. Things went a bit side ways for a little bit after my hair algae problem subsided.

I've lost a few sps frags, 50% of my zoos have disappeared. Growth stopped for a bit and lost sps colour.

Parameters are looking rock solid though. Very strange

dkh 8.0
ca 410
nitrate 0.02
P04 0.04
mag 1400
temp 77.5

Today, I'm starting to see growth again and colour is bouncing back!
I think the tank is starting to mature a bit, so i hope things go well from now on.

On the flip side, we've had a few major expense come our way over the last few month and coral shopping has come to a halt recently.:angryfire:

Needless to say, we just had our roof replaced this week and we had to order new windows for our home, all 22 of them :eek2: Although the new roof looks great and the new windows will look even better, its a hard pill to swallow. Especially after the house reno and tank build. :hammer::hammer::hammer:

So i'm hoping to grow out what I have left in sps and do a bit of trading with locals to stock this tank again.

So thats about it around my neck of the woods, I'll be sure to post some pics tomorrow to show what little progress I got if any lol.

cheers

Hello everyone, sorry I've been absent for about 3 months now that I look back at my last post.

I've been having some bad luck with this tank and things are just starting to turning around now.

The algae issue has come and gone as of April and the tank is free from hair algae. But the last few months I've been battling Dinos, yes the dreaded almighty dinos. I've been slowing removing my fine sand bed and it's helped a lot. I had the same problem with my last tank and I used fine sand in the beginning as well. I should have learnt my lesson then. Oh well.

BTW, my red dragon pump for alpha250 also died. So I wasn't skimming for about 2-3 weeks.

Unfortunately I lost quite a bit of stuff from the dinos, almost a years worth of growth down the drain :( including all my zoos.

Whats left of the survivors, I can tell you they are pretty beat up, bleached and stunted. Colour has returned in some of my montis so I'm hoping its looking up as they were the first ones to show signs of trouble. Funny as I didn't lose one monti and they were the canary. Only sticks and obviously the rare ones that kicked the bucket:(

I'd post a pic of the tank, but it's pretty bare and life less(coral-wise)

My plan for the next month or so goes a little something like this.

Siphon out the remaining fine sand
Increasing flow
Slowing adding coarse sand 1-2mm
Re-stocking frags, hopefully I can find some decent ones again for a good price as the wife is watching my spending lately.:rolleye1:

Its been a pretty busy around the house as well as we had to do more renos to the house. We just finished doing a new roof and windows throughout the entire house. It was a big hit to the wallet. Now the wife is shopping for all new blinds. Thinking I should sell my left nut to raise fish tank funds lol

Even having to do the roof and windows earlier then we expected. We are very pleased with the outcome of the house. We went with a coloured window to match our new roof and it dramatically changed the look of our home.

Anyways, thats about it in the deeznutz household. I hope everyone is enjoying their summer. Especially since schools out!:bounce3::bounce3::bounce3:

Glad your house renovations are complete. That's always a big relief. I'm sure your tank will bounce back soon, best of luck!

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. It was a dark time looking back at my last post.

I'm happy to say that things are doing well again. Tank is stable and colour has returned with some explosions in growth :)

I've finally figured out my lighting and the Radions are doing a fantastic job. I'm very happy with the colour and I know a lot of people have complained about colour under leds. I've been able to get some rich deep colours.

Anyways on to the pics!

Looks good and glad to hear things are back on track. I was actually wondering about your tank the other day but couldn't find it or remember your user name or thread title to search for it.

Thanks man, looks like I read your mind :)

Nice pics, looks like you've got your system headed back in the right direction

Thanks man, I sure hope so. I need to stock it with more frags now. You got any trimmings?:bounce2:

This is the first time I've ran a bare-bottom tank. I'm not crazy about the look, but it seems to be working just fine. I do miss my sand bed tho.

I like that I can see where all the detritus ends up and man a whole lot does accumulate quickly. I've been trying to disturb it at night with the mag float to feed my SPS

I also don't get anymore sand storms  and running my mp40s on full jam!

Anyways, I'm hoping to pick up a dozen more frags in the next few weeks so I can get this baby to fill a little bit.
