Diatom filter use ????

I came across my OLD diatom filter from my FW days, and was thinking of putting it back in service on my 120 mixed reef...... My LFS said that the "powder" (Diatomecous earth) would kill my corals if ANY got into the tank....... Does anyone us this filter on a reeftank ??? If so, have you had any problems / concerns with the powder getting into the tank ???? I'm not talking large quantities.........

I have used it many times. It does not cause diatom outbreaks. Put some powdered carbon in it and nothing compares to it's ability to polish up the water. Good to use when your doing maintenance and water changes.

I just used one for four days .... clearing the water from all of the coraline "dust" after I cleaned the back glass of the aquarium.

They are great for clearing the water column, and like reefkeeper2 said, nothing polishes the water better than using the powdered carbon along with it.
