Did you read this month's Reefkeeping magazine?

Very interesting article in the invertebrate corner titled "Do You Know Who You're Dealing With? Get to Know the Real Ilyanassa obsoleta."

Anyone who has bought these snails off of Ebay or elsewhere should read and formulate their own opinion. I know a lot of the LFS are selling them now as well. Last weekend I was in OKC and several of the stores had them.

Anyway in case people hadn't check out this month's addition, thought I would put comment out here as I thought it was a pretty interesting article.

Yes, I read that. It is a GREAT article. I'm against using them for general average aquarium cleanup crews. Nassarius snails are far better suited. But, on the other hand when I first got in the hobby, I got quite a few of these and they have been through the best of times and the worst of times and about 75% of them are doing fine. They've survived temperature ranges from 72-90ºF over the past 1.5 years. But I won't actively buy them again.

its funny, I bought a bunch of these from ebay a while back. And most have made use of their lives as new hermit shells. I have around 300-400 blue leg hermits, and they are actually killing the Ilyanassa obsoleta for their shells. I am not too sad about it, being the diseases they carry and what not. But I agree with Trav, will not actively buy them again.

Keys Critter is the only place for me, now

I had a few of the real Nassarius snails, and a whole bunch of the black snails sold to me a t a LFS as Nassarius, and I can honestly say there is no real comparison for me. The real ones were AWESOME cleaners, and with the ilyanassa in there, my sandbed was always messed up and a lot of my other snails started dying. Thanks for posting that link because it cleared up a lot.

I recall someone getting into a debate on here or OMAS forum when everyone starting buying these. They said pretty much what the article is saying and got bashed while everyone continued to get their sweet ebay deal. Wish I could find the thread, some people might be having crow tomorrow.

I am very pleased to see another article on this years ago. There used to be a Shimek article the subject.

Sad but true........ Most of us here on RC know much more than the local fish stores.
