Diy led

The TBRC group buy helped a lot since they covered the shipping.

110 - 18,000k LEDs @ $1.29 = $141.90 (Still have 10 left)
20 - Royal Blue LEDs @ $2.29 = $45.80 (Still have 10 left)
1 - Power supply (large) @ $39.99
1- Power supply (small) @ $29.99
110 - 60 degree optics @ $.15 = $16.50 (Still have 10 left)
4 - two-part epoxy @ $6.00 = $24 (Still have 1 full kit left)
Heat sink 3" channel = $56
Wire and solder = $24
Total = $378
I'm very happy with the outcome and electricity savings and tank heat savings and color flexibility and not buying new Radiums each year and...........

I was just wondering if someone can help me out with my wiring plan as I am kind of confused. I plan on using 120 fedy's, 80 white and 40 rb using ONLY 4 meanwell 60-48's, but I would like to run them at close to full power. Now I know that one meanwell will only run about 28 leds each so how would I wire this setup? I am guessing that I should wire the blues to their own driver because that is what everyone is doing. So would I use two ballasts for the blues or would just one be ok? Also given your response for how many ballasts for the blues, how many should I use to power the whites?

My plan was to use 1 ballast for the blues running 2 strings of 20 each, and 3 ballasts for the 80 whites running 2 strings of 13 on 2 of the ballasts and then on the last ballast run 2 strings of 14.

You said you wanted to run it on 4 ELNs but then your plan is for 5....which is what I came up with for you as well. Using 5 your plan is fine. You just need to keep the parallel strings balanced on each driver like you are planning.

If you can find the Meanwell HLG series you could do it with 2 drivers....HLG 185-36 and the HLG 120-42

I think it is time for me to convert over to the BRIGHT side. I have a few questions. How many LEDs would I need about for a hard core 180g sps tank? I was thinking of a 3 to 1 ratio (White 18000k / Royal Blue). I like the looks of Typlus5 setup.

I am running 240 Total 160 18,000 , and 80 Royal Blue , over my 300 and it is super bright . The tank is 72"X36"x27"deep . When I turned it on on full power I bleached all my corals . I had to lift my canopy all the way up , and kick back my photo period to 4hr. I now have Mean Well Drivers , and I am running the 18,000s at 30% , and the Royal Blues at 75% . The color is coming back slowly ,and I love the new look . When I get done I should be running the 18,000s at 60% , and the Royal Blues at 100% .

reefrubble, have you put a killawatt on your new light setup to calculate how much electricity you're using/saving? My tank is 72x30x30 so I'd likely come up with a nearly-identical setup if I made the conversion.

Anyone else have power consumption/savings info they like to share with me? Anectdotal or otherwise?

I have, just not with a killawatt.
I did amps x total voltage of a string to find out the total consumption.

XR-E 8 strings of 8 RBs @ 750mA 8 x (0.75 x 27,53) = 166 watt
XM-L 4 strings of 10 CWs @ 800mA 4 x (0.8 x 30.3) = 97 watt
XM-L 2 strings of 10 NWs @ 800mA 2 x (1 x 30.5) = 49 watt
3x 10V 500mA wallwart for dimming makes 15 watt
Not sure how much the 3 HLG drivers consume.

Used to have 8 x 80 watt T5 bulbs - so with the LEDs using up 327 watt - the savings will be around 50%.

How are you getting these LED's so cheap? It's like 1/4 of what I have seen everywhere else. If anyone has 12 whites and 12 blues they dont need anymore please let me know.

I really haven't had the time , but I know it is a lot less than the MHs , and VHOs .

Interesting question isn't it? Someone on a different thread asked me if I had taken measurements because his friend was running 2 ELN 60-48 and measured 125W but only had 72W of LEDs. I don't know for sure but our drivers may be pulling full power from the wall and while our LEDs don't see it the difference is probably losses, from heat, voltage clamping, current management, etc. I shall pose the question to The Write Up and Mr K

ps...started popping FEDY's over my biocube...1 each of the last 2 days...running 500ma but due to space restriction in the hood there is lack of airflow so keep them cool. Luckily I have a pile of spares on hand which was the point when I bought them.

I was going to make three 20inch by 20inch lights @: (36W to 18RB) *3 = 162 Each unit will have 54 LEDs

My $400 dollar electric bill has to stop!

I'm selling my used and new LED driver
bigger driver can run 80 FEDY's LEDs and small driver
good to have spare LED driver
$ 30 each
or take trade with nice SPS frag

Very nice Jae! What is the ratio of whites to blue? Are you using any neutral whites or all cool white? Also do you use any regular Blues or just Royal Blues now? Do you have any plans to change any colors?

DIY heatsink

I have some precut 2"aluminum U channel I won't be using for sale. It will make 3 - 18" square panels which was designed to fit over a 72' X 24" tank. I was going to make the separate panels so that I would have the flexibility to use 2 over a 48" tank or 2 smaller tanks. I also have aluminum to build a 16" square for a fuge or smaller tank.

21 - 18' pieces and 7 - 16' pieces. $75.00 thats less than $2 / ft that the group buy paid.

Does anyone have any leftover FEDY? I need three. I dont care if they are blue or white. I seem to keep damaging mine in transport.
