Picking up the lumber tomorrow. If I want the stand to be roughly 4' tall how many 8' 2x4's should I buy?

I know that everytime I make a lumber run I end up going back a second time as I did not do my figures correct. :)

Cheers and post pics when you have a chance,
Alex

Seems like the fuge/sump size is often an issue. I got lucky in that mine is not going under my tank or I am sure I would have not reailized I had an issue till I had built the darn thing. I made one mistake as it is and not adding a second was lucky.

Here is my finished stand in place:

Awesome Michael. So far I've got the bottom frame done. Two screw screw strips and three legs up. I've got all the wood cut and ready to go, I'm just waiting on the damn drill again.

Edit: I really wish I'd gotten nails instead... :(

If you had gone with nails, youd be waiting for feeling to return to your arm. ;) I do not know about you, but I can not hammer more than a few nails before I start to loose control in my arm. That is why I always use screws.

Still have a bunch of screws to go. It's level as hell on the outside but as soon as it gets on my tile it's a little wobbly. Shims will fix that right?

Im at the point in my build where I am about to paint my stand. The inside and the frame for waterproofing.

I am going to use Kilz primer to seal it. Will I be ok just to give it 2 good coats with Kilz? Rather than a latex or oil base on top.

Thanks

I just put the first coat of Kilz on last night. I say first coat because the wood absorbed a good bit of it. I'll use either latex or a 2 part marine paint to make the bottom more water proof in case of spills.

Use the 2 part it will hold up to the salt water a lot better than any latex paint will.

Thanks Kim, will do.

Where do you get 2 part marine paint? How does it work?

You can get it from paint stores like Sherwin Williams or from some of the boating stores like U.S. Boat or West Marine. If all else fails, you can find it on line and order it. HD or Lowes may carry it but I never looked. I think I'll check tonight on my way home from work.

Lots of things in this hobby are not simple.

But there is no sense complicating simple things like painting a friggin stand either. If your stand is taking a bath in salt water, you got other probems that two part paint ain't gunna take care of.
