Don´t provoke the Achilles ( Advice needed )

Hi,
my name is Marc and I´m a German reefer.
First of all I want to apologize for my poor english, as it´s not my native language. Hope it´s not to painfull to read :headwally:

I´m keeping an Acanthurus Achilles in my 250g tank.
At the moment he´s happy and fat and most important he´s getting along
with the other fishes.

Current stocklist:

1x Acanthurus Achilles
10x Pseudanthias Parvirostris
1x Labroides Dimidatus
1x Pseudo. Ocellatus aka Mystery wrasse
1x Flasher Wrasse hybrid unknown

Wishlist:
2x Liopropoma carmabi ( pair )
1x Jordani wrasse ( pair )
10x Pseudanthias Parvirostrix ( can´t get enough of them :inlove: )
2x Odontanthias Borbonius
1x Pygoplites Diacanthus

It would be nice if you could give me a fed advices if it´ll work out or if there are any no goes regarding those fishes. The only fish im a bit concerned of adding is the Regal Angel. In my previous tank my powder blue went berserk when I introduced him and wiped out the complete tank because he got ICH :headwallblue: At first I wanted to add the Regal in the first but I got an amazing Achilles who´s eating everything from flakes to sticks. Finally looking forward hearing your advices and thanks for reading. Hope you could understand what I was writing :wavehand:

Greets from Frankfurt am Main.

hey sagaris! welcome to reefcentral! :)

IMHO Tangs and Angels can co-exist but with caution though..how big is your Achilles? Usually what people do is introduce the Angel first (to establish territory and then introduce the Tang 2nd) and based on what i learned and read, Regals could be quiet aggressive especially if it tries to roam and look for a spot to own so this might stress your Achilles out a bit..

hope that helps :)

Hello! I just wanted to say that my family is from Esslingen which is near Stuttgart! Glad to see a fellow German! Although, I don't speak much German :) My cousins, aunts and uncles still live there!

I am curious though, can we see a picture of your tank?

servus wie gehts?

you are quite right to be cautious adding a regal, these are very shy fish and if bullied will not eat and die.

what i find helps is to seperate the tank with egg crate with all exisiting fish on one side and then add the regal by itself so less stress on the fish, it can eat, find a spot and also give the established fish time to look and get used to the other fish in it tank. this seems to curb agression and have a success rate for me. I keep seperated for 3-7 days then remove the crate at lights out.

here is a image for reference

The crate option works very well however it also does cause some stress, and achilles are prone to whitespot with stress, it is a gamble but i would make sure , water quality is very good and use the eggcrate option when adding new fish.

The trick that has worked for me is adding a mirror to the end of the tank for a 2 or 3 days and leaving the tank lights off for a day or two. This has worked for me since my Achilles has been in the tank for over a year now. He even went after my 9" Tusk until I did the mirror trick.

My only concern is the Regal. If you quarantine it and get it eating and happy first, it may work, but the Achilles, unless kept otherwise occupied may take issue with it. Your English is fine, much better than my German. Are you able to obtain a Red Sea Regal?

regal would still need enough space when adding it and separating it in the tank, IMHO if he can get a regal that would be of the same size as the tang (or a little bit bigger) then it might establish dominance over the tang, would rearranging rockwork do the trick??

thanks for all your posts.

@ ryanrid
I was quite succesfull with Regal Angels in my former tank. I had an unknown deases in my tank that wiped out everything from Fishes to corals.
The egg crate sounds really good. Will definetly try that

@ snorvich
Quarantine will not be a problem and getting it to eat also. There´s no problem getting a Red Sea Angel in Germany. Prices for a Red Sea Angel are 50€ higher but I think they are prettier then others

Prettier for sure! In my experience they are long term viable whereas the indopacific sometimes never eat or eventually stop eating.

If your tang is 6" or larger try finding the smallest angel you can and add him after proper qt. One of my favorite things is to watch a small angel 2-3" pick at live rock in a large tank.
