gonna try the randy's solution.
i heard home depot doesn't carry them, anywhere else to get this stuff locally? i don't think i can haul 50 lbs though :D

dowflake (cacl) can be had in pellet form from a pool supply. i use the hardness adjuster from leslie's pool supply. it's pricier per lb, but it's local and in 8lb (i think) buckets.

where can we get the Magnessium for randys formula?( sorry dont mean to hijack your thread)

I get my 3lb. Epsom salt at Kmart for $2.22. gbtower is correct; just go to your local Leslie's Pool Supply and look for their Hardness Plus Calcium Hardness Increaser. Remember about dosing the magnesium though. You're only supposed to dose it all at once when you're finished with the other 2 gallons of Calc. and Alk. For smaller systems Randy advises to dose it in small quantities so as to prevent any adverse effects on your corals.

Are you really supposed to dose all the mag at once at the end? I believe you CAN, but do you HAVE to? I've been doing a little at a time. I figure consistency of the mag level would be better than a slow decline followed by a big jump.

Epsom salt? I used to take baths in that crap, when I got out of surgery. You can pretty much buy that from the icecream man, it sells everywhere.

Epsom Salt (magnesium) and Dowflake/Hardness Plus Calcium Hardness Increaser (calcium)

EZ
I have about 2lbs of epsom salt left over from my discus days. We use it for a laxative. If you want it, you can have it. I work 5 min from you in downtown L.A. (Wilshire and Hope). LMK i can bring it to work.
