drummereef's 180g in-wall build

Awesome thread and Bubble Killer. My sump looks just like your "before" pics so this would be a great project to add to my list. Thanks!!!

I just wanted to say what a wonderful build you have going on. If I get fired I'm blaming you as I was so intrigued by your build I decided to spend the first 3 hours of my work day reading through your build.

I am currently working on a 180 wall build in myself and am glad I found this thread. The ideas and craftmanship you have put into your build is amazing. I could only offer the highest form of flattery and say I will outright be stealing/copying/holding for ransom a bunch of your ideas.

Fantastic job.

Thanks bheron. The higher above the water line the Bubble Killer is the better the result. I'm limited vertically in the drain section of my sump so I have some air/bubble mixture coming out of the air holes. This would be completely eliminated if I could move the Bubble Killer up another inch. Just keep that in mind with your project. ;)

 You obviously didn't read my disclaimer... and I quote:

"drummereef shall not be liable for loss of revenue, loss of friends, loss of girlfriends, and loss of memory due to inhalation of too much PVC glue from the use of the information contained in this thread. Further, skimmer addiction is highly likely."

Thanks for the kind words cromedogg. :)

If you don't mind me asking and I may have missed it through the 50 some odd pages this morning. Where did you order your sump? I'm running a different skimmer but has about the exact same requirements.

I ordered it through a local acrylic fabricator named ART Acrylics. He does all the acrylic work for the LFS in my area. I can PM you his contact info but I'm sure shipping would be quite high to Idaho is the only thing.

Yeah I can't imagine it would be cheap to ship the big heavy thing. There are a couple here in town so I may just check with them.

Did you supply the exact dimensions and mention to them this would be for for holding water?

Yes, I made a Sketchup of the design and emailed it to the fabricator. He does a lot of aquarium work so he knew it was for my reef system. I'll PM it to you. :)

Finally got a couple decent shots of the shrimp. He was being rather social this evening so I decided to snap a couple pics. :)

Mr. Shrimp and the Tang are becoming close buddies. The Tang is just starting to let Mr. Shrimp jump up and clean him. I tried to get a pic but they are still a little camera shy.

Gotta question for you. How much sand did you use to start your cycle? I've done pretty much the same thing as you did with my new tank(new sand and marco's rock) and it's almost like the tank is so sterile I'm having a hard time getting a cycle started. It's a 300 gal. DT and I put a couple of pounds of sand from my 75 that I've had for years in there along with a couple of chromis to try to get things started but nothing. The 2 chromis are swimming around happily but My water tests show no amonia, nitrites, or anything. Test kits are brand new salifert that I picked up from PA yesterday so I'm pretty sure they're good. Any thoughts?

2 chromis in a 300g and you expect to see a noticeable cycle? If you want a more noticeable cycle I would use the raw shrimp method... but take the chromis out first. Or you could add more fish.

That was kinda what I was thinking (the 2 chromis part). Do you think 2 lbs. of live sand is enough to get things started? A couple raw shrimp?

It's so cool to watch nature at work and marvel at inter species relationships.

It sure is. :)

Yes I think the Chromis and sand are enough to start and finish the cycle. I don't however think it's the best practice to use live animals for cycling but to each his own. It took exactly one month for my 180g to cycle. I didn't see anything on my testkits for a good week then the ammonia started spiking. I used roughly 2 cups of live sand but feed the tank regularly (almost daily) with frozen mysis to keep the bacteria happy. It will come with time, it just takes that... time. :)

Great build!!!! I sat here for almost 5 hours and read everything. I want to start my 110g over now...LMAO. Keep up the great work, looking forward to more progress.
