DustinC's Rimless SPS Reef

Stand Update

Tonight I worked on the stand with my cousin who has a ton of tools and equipment to properly build it. It is completely framed out and caulked. Tomorrow night I'm going to go put Kilz on the entire thing and then we will start on the finishing work. Check out the pics.

Just noticed you're going to use Tunze's for water movement; another thumbs up from me. A couple of nights ago, my daughter was unwell, so I had to sleep in the living room where the tank is...

Oh my...the noise from my two MP10's kept me awake till 3am...thats after I got up and turned the flow to less than 50%!!!!!!!!!!! My Durso standpipe and my Bubble Magus skimmer are so much quieter! :mad2:

As much as I like the Vortechs; the noise from my Gen1 and Gen2 MP10's are quite annoying.

Are you going with a Calcium reactor or a Doser like the GHL?

Thanks. I understand with the noise. That's why I decided to go with the Tunze pumps. I've always used Vortechs but I want this tank to be as quiet as possible. Hopefully I like them, and from what I've seen I think they will work great for this setup. I do not plan on using a reactor or doser for this setup. I'm very good about keeping up with water changes and shouldn't need it. I will dose individual elements if need be. Who knows though, that could change in the future.

Awesome build. Keep the pics coming. You will love the Tunze.. Very quiet. :)

Thanks! I'm definitely looking forward to quiet.

Looks great and if you have not gotten your sump built already talk to melvesreef he does a great job

Thanks. He built a sump for my Elos 70 and he did a great job. I tried calling and emailing for a quote on this one and never heard anything back. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna have Trigger Systems do it.

Stand Progress

Below are a few shots I took of the progress we made tonight on the stand. Have to still add another door and some trim but I am getting closer. Enjoy.

Update...

I picked up my tank today and it looks fantastic. I also have all the woodwork done on the stand and will work on n finishing it tomorrow. Will post pics soon and can't wait to get it up and going.

Progress at last...

Below are pictures of the stand with completed wood-work and the aquarium as it sat in the LFS. Everything has come together nicely and I'm looking forward to the progression of this tank.

Light Brackets

In my search for finding a nice solution for hanging my Sunpower, I could not find anything that would hang over anything wider than a 24" tank. Many people would be ok with the 1" difference, but I knew I would not and it would bother me if I did not have something to be perfectly center on my tank. So I was looking online for ideas and I had planned on doing a bent conduit lighting bracket until I discovered jcolletteiii's light brackets he made for his LED lighting. So, I then figured out what I needed for my lights and ordered the following parts from 8020.net through Amazon.

2 x 1010 97" Slotted Extrusion
6 x 2015GRA Endcaps
2 x 4136 Brackets
4 x 4151 Brackets
8 x 4134 Brackets
50 x 3321 Bolt Kit

This cost me around $150 for the parts to build my 2 light brackets, and I am very pleased with the outcome.

Progress Continued...

I finally finished the my stand, minus the doors, so that I could move it into my house and attach the lighting brackets and move the aquarium on top to start the plumbing and filling process. I went with the "Herbie" method for the plumbing and it is very quiet. It took several days to fill up and is turning into a fun project. My rock had been curing for over 3 weeks and was ready to go when I added it to the aquarium once full. Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Looking great so far Dustin, will be following along to see your baby grow. I like your minimal rock approach rather than loading the tank up with rock - lots of room for coral growth and fish swimming.

WOW! Great build. I am also just changing to Tunze because of the noise of the vortechs.

Will you be using a controller? I see that you have only one heater? will you be getting another? As I am sure you are aware, two smaller ones connected to a controller are better than one larger one incase of a thermostat failure.

As for live stock, you can't beat the Starry Blenny and a Flame Hawkfish. Both very cool IMO!

I actually already pulled the tunzes off. I am using a ReefKeeper and used the APC module and it didn't allow very much programming at all so I'm going back to Vortech. The tunze were dead silent but I wasn't happy with what I could do from a functionality standpoint. I will be adding another heater as well. Thanks.

Very nice, and cant go wrong with ati bulbs

Thanks. I've always been a fan of ATI and had great success with them as well.

A+ all around. Nice.

Thank you.
