EcoTech underrated their Vortechs

I'm planning on buying a pair of 6025 Tunze's. Just can't justify the price for Vortechs and I like the option of being able to aim the Tunze's. And i agree with oldimpala.

Well to be fair for the Vortechs price wise, the 6025's are not adjustable speed wise at all. If EcoTech made a non adjustable pump it'd likely be similarly priced to one of the non adjustable Tunze models.

When my tank was at full growth, an with a center-mounted overflow, aim was exceptionally important...

It kept the glass areas from being complete sandstorms....

I've used wider nozzles on the Streams to disperse the "jet" effect, but I still like being able to point the flow.

My biggest complaint was reliability and noise... Couldn't deal with the whirring...

I do miss the simplicity of the Vortech controller; I thought it provided just enough control to be useful, without some of the overly complex settings in the Tunze 7096 that make it easy to screw it up. :)

If I could combine the noise and reliabilty of the Tunze with the controller and footprint of the Vortech; that'd be where I'd re-spend my money...

Thanks guys you’re definitely making me feel better about buying them. Can’t really afford the Vortechs right now anyway. But I need something other than the hydors.

I have a single 6025 in a 29 gallon QT tank I have. It really moves the water around. It's dead silent too. :)

And I think lack of "aim" giving the ENTIRE water column the exact same flow isn't very natural. Different strokes for different folks.
What's "natural" in any aquarium? Different strokes for different folks is how I live. Post a pic of your aquarium. Here's mine.

Glad to hear you are happy with it, Gary. You're the guy who sold me on multiple mjs. I still use them but a vortech is tempting.

i don't know gary. you were mr tank of the month without vortech. pretty sure your tank would be fine w/ or without them. even if your tank looked like poo, your photography skills could make up for it.

That's a nice shot of your tank Gary.

Experience is fine, but my tanks run 80-82 throughout the day and I wanted to put the least amount of wattage in the tank. The 6025 runs 7W, a MJ1200 runs 20W.

I love the low wattage of the 6025's. I use two for flow in my 90 with a combined annual electrical cost of ~$18. The 1 MJ1200 that I have in my 10G frag tank costs ~$26/year to run.

I gave up on the MP40 after a few months. The obstruction of the side view, and disparity of flow from one side of the tank to the other, and noise were my show stoppers. It was fun to try, and I don't regret giving it a shot.

thanks, but...

thanks, but...

my camera and photography skills pale compared to others in this forum. Back when I had TOTM I had like 10 or 12 (!) MJ1200's on a wavemaker... plus returns fed from an Iwaki100RLT :eek1:

After that, I had one of those monster pieces of crap prop pumps (what was their name?). I never dabbled with Korallias.

I did run a "DIY Mag7 powerhead" at one point.

Vortech BLOWS THEM ALL AWAY. Thank goodness for good 'ol American ingenuity. Tom... it's just a matter of time before you try one :)

I still have trouble getting past the price point. Things are going very well in the tanks now and have been for a couple of years so I'm not inclined to mess with the flow too much, right now. Maybe if I sell some frags it won't feel as bad.

I'm beginning to feel like a kid with an old bicycle when the other kids have new ones.:hmm3:

Tunzes response makes a lot of sense, with the housing causing the restriction. Altering the shape of the housing is what opens up the 6025 so much. They definitely got caught with their pants down on this one, but it looks like they are responding appropriately by redesigning and making updates available to existing customers.
