Ecotech Vectra L1 Overheating/Dead!

February 16, 2017, I replaced the closed loop pump (PanWorld PS150) with a new Vectra L1. Wanted a DC to allow for control of flow during the 24 hour period and set it up for 8 hours max flow and 16 hours 30%...worked very well with the wifi setup and software.

On October 8, 2017, the Ecotech software reported to my email that the Vectra was operating at reduced power due to overheating. I opened the Vectra and cleaned some scum for the armature/interior armature housing and replace and it operated fine until the same occurrence began about every 1.5 months. Went thru the same procedure each time and the Vectra would operate ok...until a week ago.

Got the same message but it had only been 20 days since I last cleaned it!
Well, did get it to work again for this past week with a couple of overheating email....stopped and restarted the Vectra each time after a short "cooling off" period and it continued to work until today.

Today, after same message of overheating it would not restart. Took it apart again and checked but seemed ok.....I had noticed what I would call "blisters" inside the armature housing...probably from this overheating.

Replaced after looking and same problem...ugh!

Finally, took it out and replaced with the PanWorld and all ok.

It appears that even with the 1/3 day @ max power it was causing overheating of the internals and that caused the blisters, etc.

So, that's the story of another Vectra headed for the landfill..........unfortunately, 14 months later with a 12 month warranty. :sad2:

Call them anyway. I've had out of warranty stuff fixed by ETM>

Stated right in the manual that these pumps run HOT.
Had I known I never would have bought mine.
Sold it for that very reason as I ran internally & it pushed 250 gallons of water to 83 degrees.

Ecotech Marine came thru..............
Since experiencing issues prior to expiration of warranty, a new pump is coming 2-day air!!
Thanks

I have had my L1 replaced now 4 times... Always dies around month 9, I would do away with the pump completely but as long as I keep getting a replacement I will use it. The pump runs a closed loop so nothing critical

Do you get the overheating notification? What about inside the armature housing...any blisters?

I would have hoped they had made some modifications so this would not be an issue.

I sold mine after getting it replaced for a 3rd time. The blisters are a known issue that they can not seem to fix. Never had an issue getting a replacement after the warranty was up.
I did not have it hooked up to their online service so I never got an email or anything. I do no it was warm to the touch.

How do you set it up to email you for any problems ? I have a reef-link if that's a requirement

I run mine externally and have a reeflink but don't use it, so I never got a notification. To be honest every time the pump fails, I just call Ecotech... I have never looked to see if there is blistering on the inside, I would assume there is since the pump runs at 100% all the time and is always very hot to the touch

As a matter of fact, they have. If memory serves, the impeller has been modified and a more robust plastic material used in the magnet well .... maybe a few months ago. Cannot say whether the modifications help or not; just that they were made.

Excellent info!
