Really nice work!

I think your overflow cover idea is going to look pretty slick. You have me wondering how cool it would be to integrate some mangroves or some other semi submergent marine plants into your island, or perhaps even a completely terrestrial plants that could handle the salty humid air. It make an interesting touch rather just bare rock, just and idea. ;)

Hey Ed, I think you should get one or two Fighting Conchs for your open sandbed. Because they move about as they desire, they will be changing the landscape on a daily basis, as their shells appear in new locations. :)

Thanks - great idea on the mangroves.... :p I think the option are endless and it's about time we reefer start to pay more attention to the overall set-up, which fw tanks in this sense is way ahead of us :rolleye1:

Can you imagine one day a paludarium style reef tank?? That will be so cool...

Great idea Marc - u're right, 2-3 fighting conchs will be so cool!!

Mmmmmm......wonder if I can paint their shells with different colors?? :p Will be so cool to watch them all over the tank !!

HAMMERHEAD REPLACEMENT SEAL ARRIVE!!

HAMMERHEAD REPLACEMENT SEAL ARRIVE!!

YES, my replacement seal arrived this week so got to work in dismantling my hammerhead and replace the seal according to the instruction!

There is 2 parts of the seal that will need to be replace….

HammerheadIssue15.jpg

The left side is a Carbon Graphite Seal (large) with a build-in spring and the right side is a ceramic seal (small) with a rubber boot.

They send me some silicon gel lubricator too….

HammerheadIssue16.jpg

According to the instruction, it seem quite simple to exchange out the two seal

HammerheadIssue.png

So the first thing I did was to unbolt the 7 x P-bolt and nuts holding the volute….

Removing the volute was easy enough and gave it a good cleaning, including O-ring.

HammerheadIssue06.jpg

Next I remove the fan cover behind the motor shaft.

HammerheadIssue07.jpg

HammerheadIssue08.jpg

Once the fan cover is removed, you can see the fan has a huge center screw. I have to place a large screwdriver to lock the shaft and then you can unthread the impeller from the motor shaft.

HammerheadIssue09.jpg

Once the impeller is unthread, you should be able to see the ceramic seal….you then simple remove the old seal and replace with a new seal.

HammerheadIssue14.jpg

Next you will need to loosen the 4 M-bolts attaching the bracket to the motor. Once the bracket is removed, you should be able to see the Carbon Graphite Seal

HammerheadIssue11.jpg

The Carbon Graphite Seal is located at the motor section.

HammerheadIssue10.jpg

You need to press it out from the motor side of the bracket to removing the old seal and follow by gently pressing the new seal back in place.

You can see the new seal is on the left side…

HammerheadIssue12.jpg

HammerheadIssue13.jpg

After giving all the parts a good cleaning and lubrication (where necessary) I reinstalled back the pump.

Will leave it for a day to dry before wet testing it out again!!

Glad you're inspired with the 'open look'.....

Post here your tank dimension and we will see what we can come out with...

I'm trying to find some time to post some tips on aquascaping hopefully in coming weeks for those who is interested as I realize there is not much write-up on aquascaping....!!

:D

Im going to take you up on that too, Ed. Im totally stumped with my dimensions. I got a little spoiled with 36" width, going to 30" will be a big change.

I hav a center overflow. I was thinking of building a lage rock stack ot the left side of the tank, away from the back of the tank, so I can fit a wavebox back there. Then having a thinner, but taller branching tower to help cover the overflow in the center. the on the right, a small island. Maybe having that right side island one good size pieces of LR.

I really like the idea of mangrooves, here´s an example of one small tank of one great brazilian aquarist, Mr. João Carlos Basso, this picture shows a little mangroonve coming out of the center island, I´ve seen this thank personaly when I went to Basso´s house, and I can say that after some months after this picture was taken, the mangrooves grew a lot covering all the pipes giving a very natural look to the system, hope you like the idea, it would be terrific.

True on the 5th view being surface turbulence but it's a simple 'flick of a switch' to off em pumps or reduce flow whenever I want to impress someone on the 5th view

the feed timer on the tunze controller is ideal for this :) I can get a great view of the tank from above with the press of a button. I concur with this approach ;)

Another comment on some of your recent chatter. While my exposed rock is not covering the overflow (though that's such a good idea) I do have one or two extruding rocks above the water surface and I have to say it's one of the visual touches that I really like in my stack. I think you will find this an excellent choice in your reef.

Is this a front view tank?

Your plan above will work if u like lot's of rocks work?? Are you for 'less is more' look or the usual 'balance rock/ corals' look??

My boss had to do that to his hammerhead pump at work.

Did it work well after replacement of the seal??

So true - that's why I decided to used my Tunze multi controller for the stream hook up instead of my GHL as it's much easier to adjust :D

Yeah, rocks coming out of the water surface, especially in our shallow tanks really give the tank a whole new character and look.

IMO, it looks a lot more natural, especially when you look at the tank as an overall set-up.

There will be rocks protruding out of the water for sure when I'm done with the scape.... :D

Only thing is to figure out how to do it seamlessly with the island on top

OMNI DUAL FLEX NOOZLES

OMNI DUAL FLEX NOOZLES

My Ocean Motions Omni Dual flex nozzles also arrived…..

Full Nozzle:
OnmiFlexDual01.jpg

2 Section Nozzle:
OnmiFlexDual02.jpg

These nozzles are so COOL and can disperse the flow from my CL even wider….

Planning to used the full nozzle near my Lagoon Island section as this enable me to adjust the nozzle, where necessary

The 2-section nozzle will be place at both the far end island as the position of the flow is somehow fix….
