Hi arctictwist,
As for your aquascape, I think it's quite nice but can be improved....
Overall I think it's too centered but the overall shape you try to achieve it's quite good. In scaping, it's always important not to scape two equal piece as research have shown that the eyes somehow don't focus on the center!! So it's best to used the golden 5:3 ruling and determine where your focus point should be
(and in your case, I think it should be the larger island and the valley in between)
Hope you don't mind that I take your picture and play with it a little as it's easier for me to explain this way......
1st Picture:
I've label the picture with no to explain better what I mean:
1. Suggest to remove the top tier of rocks and convert this with some overhangs...
2. Add two pieces lower rocks at the bottom
3. Make some cave in this area for fishes
4. Lower and make a smaller island. With the reduce size in your island, you can then move this smaller island forward to give your tank some depth
2nd picture:
In the 2nd picture, I black out the suggested rocks to be removed and added in the additional rocks to be added.
1. Replace with suitable rocks to make overhangs...flat pieces are good for this
2. This large cave should remain
3. The 2nd smaller cave should also remain
4. Leave this area clear for your valley look from your bed
5. Creating a second smaller island with a smaller cave for fishes but moving it slightly forward at an angel compare to the larger island.
Alternatively (if you want to redo the rock work completely) You can make the left side island (larger island) into a pillar form with PVC structure...
Another thing I would suggest is also to removed your egg crate from under the tank. I presume you will be using sand and once the sand fills in between the eggcrate, it will become a detritus trap on it's own and will cause you problems in a long term. Better to used smaller pieces of egg crate (or better still acrylic rods or simply PVC pipe with hole drill at the side) just under the rocks as stand and leave the rest bare glass....
Not sure what your purposed of the egg crate?? is it to prevent rock landslide from cracking your base?? If this is your purpose, maybe best to used a piece of starboard?? Or simply glue your rock work together so that it won't slide !!
Just my 2 cent.
Hope that helps......
The way I see it, with the 2nd picture, you will be able to get the view you wanted from your bed and also from the front view it still give it some depth because of the different size/ focus points of each island and valley.
