Elliott's Reef: 900g DT , 400g sumps

Appreciate your thoughts/input Dave  Between you and Elliott,...I know how to handle / what to do. Thanks,---Rick

Sorry to disagree. Not all sand is sand. It has to be aragonite sand, else you end up with high silicates and diatoms forever.

I don't know if you have ever rinsed a significant amount of used sand by hand before but it takes HOURS and tons of water. I know you have to rinse new aragonite sand too, but that is nothing compared to rinsing used sand from a reef tank.

If your time and/or the cost of water matters to you it is a lot easier to just start over with new aragonite sand IMHO.

agreed, I was under the impression Rick was adding a small amount of the same sand to his reef tank, rather than complete substrate, there are many things to consider with regards to the types of substrate, no substrate, depth of substrate, flow/sand storms, type of livestock vs type of substrate, etc, etc.

Yes it will be a small amount,...maybe in the range of a 40lb bag or two. I seen a guy on craigslist in my area has 4 or 5 buckets for sale. He has it listed as dead(live sand)...if I go that route I would thoroughly check its PO4 and NO3 levels before adding it to my tank.---Rick

sounds like a plan

Hey Elliott, I need some help in identifying some spots that have started showing up on some of my live rock.
The rock is in my refugium,...I don't really see the spots in my DT. It's on most all the rock in the refug,...Here is a little input,...my mag was a little low 1100,..I have a couple pieces of green cap that are under some bright LED's...maybe the bright light???
I searched RC but not the right answer...guys that had spots on their rock were mainly new tank setups.
I'm kind of stumped...thought you or one of the knowledgeable reefers that follow your thread might be able to shed some light on what is causing these spots.
I have linked some pics and you can use the zoom for a better look.
When you have a chance,...let me know if you have seen this stuff. Thanks,---Rick

I don't know what caused those spots on the rocks however I personally would not worry about it, probably represents differences in mineralization, now more pronounced after your cleaning treatments

Maybe the start up,...not sure. My tank has never been much for corraline, although I have always been wanted it. This morning I took the small piece of blue(dead coral) out for a closer look. The spots are almost like a stain,...toothbrush won't remove them, only scraping with a knife.,...and the side not facing light seems to be void of them. If its corraline,..I'll be happy,...I didn't want something to get started and out of hand, as they appear kind of dark,...up close they do have a bit of purple cast. Thanks,---Rick

Same exactly here...5:30 6:00 365 days,...if for some reason I don't wake up,...the dog reminds me,...let me out :lmao:
