Finally Dragonvale's 50 gallon Starphire display cube journal

Just watch out for the tang police...

Oh certainly. I have full confidence in Jason's husbandry as well. It's just that RC is notorious for over-the-top Tang Police. Doubt there's any in our little group though.

I was part of NorCal reefers. We had a tang police individual... That's why I got one tang cause technically the rule of thumb is 50 gallons per tang. I'd seriously keep that rule of thumb in mind cause there will be arguments. Especially with powder blues!

Don't always assume someone wont fire a shot. :fun2: But in all fairness look how far a powder blue will cover in the sea. I was watching a documentary and the amount of distance was ridiculous.

RReadabout "nuking" the rock with chlorine and muriatic acid. It worked great for me on the rock work from toms tank. I am 6 months in and no phosphates per my colorimeter.

I think I posted the info in my build thread.

QUOTE=Dragonvale;22041229]Thanks everyone.

Robert, the pictures posted were when I first got the tank (beginning of this year).

The tank is not custom but bought from a company from SoCal.

Colin, for some reason I'm starting to sway back to sticks. I'm pretty disappointed in being successful in growing zoas/palys to the colony melting or the colony melting after fragging. Or even yet, buying that zoas 3 times to have it melt every time. LOL

For flow I have still two MP40's from the 250. I may just use one and dial it down to 1000GPH hope that's not too much just from one pump. I also have a new WP25 which I can try out also.

The only concern is the dead rock that I have and leaching phosphates in the future when the tank is up and running. I guess there is no 100% way to be sure besides cycling it for many many many months. If anyone has a 3-4 week process I'm all ears.[/QUOTE]

Just re read your first post and wondering why you decided to go away from running the kessil 360? I've yet to see anything come close(to me anyways) that looks as good as the kessils and the only reason I waiver is because it costs so much to run them on a controller.

I haven't really seen a thread with a 350 used for over a year. Showing growth, basically a before an after in a years Progress. Plus at the time the goose necks weren't available and I had this metal halide fixture. So rather than spend money and being comfortable with a mh, I decided just to go that route.

Plus you see 350 and 360 being sold and you noticed the reefer is going with another light source or a 50/50 hybrid etc....

I'll have to do some digging on that. I know the store on piner and run them in their main display tank over a year now and I've seen good results.

I was just there 2 weeks ago, prior to that almost a year. What tank were you referring to? The large one in the back?

Yeah the large one in the back. It could use a few more lights on it but in general I've noticed good growth on the sps under the main lights.

What's the main lighting? I really didn't pay attention when I was there but what I do remember previously was seeing 5-6 kessil 150s covering half the tank.

From what I remember they have like two or three a350's on it and under those there's some decent sized sps colonies that have grown a lot, and then there's two or three 150's to fill in the gaps, but the center of the tank is fairly shaded still and could use another light.

Finally got time to create my top off setup. I went with a tunze nano osmolator since their tried and true with no complaints that I have heard of. Pumps is really small and it surprised me on the amount of water pushed out. Only thing I'm concerned about is the distance the dosing pumps would have to go to dose alk/ca/Mag. Worst case scenario two containers will be inside of the stand and Mag will be manually dosed.

Pardon the mess. Still have to install the reef keeper elite and straighten out all the wires. Plus create more saltwater for the frag tank to sell some frags :)

Looking good man =).

What dosers you running? I wouldn't worry at all the distance as long as the lines are primed and don't lose it you should be golden. My old frag tank had standard brs doses from like 6' away and 4' vertical.. I had to put a check valve but it worked perfect..

I think you made the right decision to not go solely kessils I like the light but for sps it's lacking.. Every coral I've gotten from kessils lit tanks or stores look great under it but in my tank the colors just aren't real.. Hard to explain but it takes a while to really color back up to where it should be..

Dosers that I'll be running is the coralvue aquahouse. Each unit has its own timer and is fairly easy to program which I like. Basic 5ml every 8hr input, 16ml ever 12 hours, 8ml every 2 hrs basically anything you want etc.... I've used the first generation Onyx and I will say those units kicked ***. The tank was only 13-16 inches deep which I got from Rapid and Mike. I noticed some corals looked kick *** under LED and some better under metal halides. Before having the display tank I was using the frag tank. Half was MH and the other Onyx. When it came to adjusting an LED coral to MH it took a while and it wasn't certain you would pop the same colors. I was going to actually use both Onyx fixture over my 50 gallon cube but it would have looked weird to me to see two units over the tank. Another thing that I hated was taking pictures top down with LED lighting. With a rimless look top down was going to be common for me.

***Thanks for the heads up on the length of the dosers operating range. I'll be drilling more holes in the vinyl chest :) *****
