Fishing trip gone awry...

okay, so i sat and sat and sat for what seemed like forever last night trying to catch my dominoe damsel with the fish trap loaned to me at the meeting, it's the simple string attached to a door design. Does anybody have any advice on what kinds of foods to put in here or how best to go about catching the bugger. I used every type of flakes, pellets, and frozen cubes i have, and tried soaking some in garlic even. The only dude in my tank who even took notice was my coral beauty, whom I was able to "practice catch" about 10 times. The Dominoe just sets up station right outside the little trap door and waits until food floats out. maybe he's smarter than he looks.

That sounds about right. Not only are they mean, they are smart. You could try the food in a net trick. Put some food in a fish net, let the fish swim in to eat, and scoop the fish out.

dont feed the tank for a few days. leave the trap in the same spot.

add food to trap and sit back and snag him.

I have yet to fail on a fish i wanted out.....and i have caught many.

Travis, I tried that before. This little guy knows exactly what that green net is, heck, I even tried my white brine shrimp net, thought I could catch him off guard. No good.

Paul, I kinda had a similar thought last night, I left the trap in there overnight and did not feed this morning. I just hope I don't get a mosh-pit of fish all diving for the food trap once I put food in there again. Lord knows they brawl it out under the feeding ring everyday, some of the funniest fish antics I've seen yet.


Just a side thought, My woman kept laughing at me last night cause she found me in the fish room with my feet up, cold soda in my hand, and a fishing line. She said I looked like I was at the lake trying to catch "the big one".

yep, been there done that.

Heres how you do it.


Take a frozen cube, ad to the trap. let the door close and let the cube dissolve. The fish will be very interested.....slowly open door. You may catch a few others along the way, but they can be returned.

No problem Travis, I'm going to use it to get out the Dominoe and hopefully this will help me to remove the baby bangaii's and possibly the parents as well. I think I may move them to their own breeding tank for future ease.

The last damsel I removed, well, all 2 of them at the time.... I finally had enough and drained the tank. Removed the rock and scooped them up. Was a pain, but it worked.
The tank needed a good cleaning so it worked out.

You don't even need to remove the rock if you drain it down to a well dug in a corner: the fish will all go to the last available water. The danger is to your sponges: you have to make sure they don't expose to air, which means moving fast.

Nope, I been through the whole, empty the tank scenario before, I'm not doing that again. (never buying another coral banded shrimp for that matter either). Besides, I just got the rock like I wanted, lol.

Update: I managed to get a few fish in the trap but not my dominoe. and I mean a few fish at once, it was quit a little scene going on.

1 small tube fish trap
2 ocellaris clowns, 1 female bangaii, 1 coral beauty, 1 scarlet hermit, 1 blue legged hermit, and the starfish was making a beeline for the trap until I made everyone get out.

I never was a very good fisherman.
