Flash Experimentation

For corals and shadows, a snoot for the Flash might be an idea but i can imagine using this for shooting in a Tank can be complicated.. Nice shots!

Wow! Those look nice. The trigger in the first shot is just devine! There appears to be some strange artifacts in the black surrounding the subjects. Maybe its my screen?

I very much like the pic of the Halichoeres wrasse. Well done.

Thank you.

Thanks.

I've just checked using my iPhone and iPad, it's showing on the Lionfish. I'll have to sort that out. I usually check stuff on different screens to make sure but it was late last night.

How do you get the black background is it post processing in photoshop the pictures are incredible was the flash mounted on camera or overhead on top of tank were the photos shot handheld or using a tripod. We're those captured with a macro or a telephoto or standard zoom

Dang Franky, are you excited??? Find some punctuation!!! Joking dude!!!

It's very easy to have a black backround when using a flash. Just experiment using lower apertures, (higher numbers).

Fan- freakin-tastic! This is how online livestock retailers should present their livestock. The black makes all the difference.

well done sir

I couldn't get my background that black even if I took my fish out of the tank and laid it on a black velvet may lol. It seems like I have a lot of experimenting to do. Oh and yes awesome pictures make me very excited lol so jealous I can only watch and not take such pics. One day or year lol. Keep em coming I'm a picture tramp lol

Thanks guys for the feedback, it's much appreciated and I'm glad you like them. I cheated a bit with the black background and used photoshop. The flash from above does darken the background nicely but I thought I'd try making them completely black and see how it turns out. It's better than having a boring blue background and decor my LFS has in it's tanks visible.

Frankly - hand held, flash above and commanded with the pop up and a macro lens.

Aaron could you possibly make a video showing how to achieve the black background using photoshop. I'm sure it's via layers and mask I've tried but my attempt don't come out as clean as yours, seems like your good at not only photography but at post processing too, a pretty lethal combination lol

I'll post a link to the tutorial I used to grasp it when I get home from work this morning. If you still struggle i'll see about doing a video (working nights currently so time is limited). The more you take your time with it the better it turns out. It can be pretty fiddly though.

This was the way I mentioned. I may have to touch up some, bit it works pretty well.
