is 1200 gph in a 130 enough flow. i have it on a oceans motions so the water movment is very random

is that ok for now?

soon i want to add my second OM on a 950 gph pump and possiably a surge device ( 1/2-1 gallon every 30 seconds) but want to make sure that the surge wont shorten my tanks life ( acrylic)

You have less than 10 X turnover. that is if you are getting the full 1200 gph that the pump is rated for, ( head pressure, elbows etc will reduce it ). I am not familiar with the OM so I dont know that it doesn't reduce the flow too.

Some folks have up to 100X flow. I would say you need to get closer to 30X if you are trying to keep acropora. I have two returns of 2150, plus two Tunze streams and a Tunze wavebox on my 185. Not sure how to calculate the flow of the wavebox but I think I got someplace near 45X when Tunze are at maximum before wavebox.

ok. i know i dont have enough flow by the numbers. but considering the turbulance ( everything move.. i have a few corals fall over that are way out of the way from the outletjets.) thought that would be more important seems like the acro is happy . all the polyps are out.

but i will make a surge device as soon as i can find info on weather or not it danmages the acrylic over time

If the 1200 is your retun on the OM you need to add some aditional Flow inside the tank.. either a closed loop or streams. Id close loop the OM with at least 2000 GPH and use the 10X pump for return...

In all honesty, I've seen some tanks that looks insane with only about 17x turnover. Its all about how you set up the tank and how much water movement is able to get to certain areas of your tank. In mine, i didn't do a good job of the rock work so I had to increase the flow in the display. But I guess it all depends on your individual setup.
