For the love of Genicanthus

How quickly are people's Bellus growing? Do they tend to be slow growers, or is mine just not getting enough nutrition? It came to me not much bigger than a half dollar roughly two years ago and has about tripled in size roughly 3" long, but she's still pretty tiny. Always has a nice fat belly, though, so I've just been wondering.

I have a trio (3 females) of Bellus angels that I got a year ago, I got them very small and they have not grown much. They eat pretty much everything from frozen mysis, pellets, flakes, and nori. I think they are just slow growers. I have a flame and potters angel that are now larger than my Bellus even though they were a bit smaller than my Bellus back when I got them. I am hoping to get a male from the group but it may take a while at the rate they are growing since most males I have seen have been over 3 1/2 ".

my bellus is still small too. I think they have a high matabolism. not much growth but i think that is normal for some genicanthus, esp bellus. not saying they wont get big in a home aquarium, but i feel like they grow slower than in the wild. Mine is a pig tho and eats everything. all my genicanthus do, matter a fact all my fish are pigs

Thats about what I've experianced and I feed and that fish ate well. Around four inches she turned male and six months later he is about 6"

Anyone know about the bladder issues of which these angels seem to be especially prone?

I bought a small female Genicanthus melanospilos from a LFS but didn't notice it swimming erratically at the time. When I got it settled into QT it was bobbing up and down characteristic of swim bladder issues. Took about a day but it's been eating chopped mysis, ova and other frozen foods quite well. However, the erratic swimming still remains.

I'm having trouble finding any info on the recovery or lack thereof with angels that demonstrate this behavior. Anyone with experience out there? Should I be medicating with something like prazi or general cure or just wait it out? She's quite thin but given how well she's eating I expect that to turn around in short order. I feed 2x/day.

I posted in the disease forum but figured this genicanthus thread might be helpful as well.

Just got my Watanabei trio from DD this morning. The male is at least 5" and the females around 3-4".
The male did not ship well, after drip acclimation, put them into my 75g QT and he just layed on his side on the floor for about an hour and just now he is swimming around a bit. The females are doing great, nibbled a little on some mysis shrimp but that's it. I'm hoping that they will eat better sometime soon.

One of the female will sometime chase the smaller one, nothing vicious. Will try to post pics once they get acclimated to brighter lights, right now the light is very dimmed. I have one 24" fluorescent light strip over the tank and that's it, it barely light the tank. So far no aggression from the male whatsoever.

Gonna make sure that they are eating very well for a few days before starting a round of Prazipro. Hope that they will start eating well later today or tomorrow.

This thread is almost 5 years old now. Time to revive it again.

Just picked up this nice pair of Genicanthus semifasciatus. Eating like pigs already.

Beautiful pair.

My original female melanospilos, now a male, is still going strong after 6 years :)

What a steal, how did you score that?

The LFS I got them from runs weekly specials. They were on the list for a couple of weeks but Saturday was the first time they were $199.99 so I jumped on it!!:lol2:
They were offering them shipped for $350.
