Frag Swap Prize

I'm helping out with my local reef clubs Frag Swap this year and we finally have enough money in the bank to be able to buy a larger item to add into our raffle this year. Unfortunately we aren't sure what we should be getting. A Tank? Vortech? Sump? Skimmer?

What sort of prize would get you excited if you saw it in a frag swap raffle?

Frag Swap Prize

Honestly, I think it's pretty tough to come up with something like that which would appeal to everyone. Personally I have no need (or space) for a new tank and equipment like a sump or skimmer or pump that would work for me and my 220G tank would be serious overkill and useless for someone with a 30G tank. Likewise, smaller equipment that would be great for someone with a smaller tank wouldn't interest me.

Something like an ATO system or a controller like the apex might have a bit more universal appeal, but you'll still find a lot of people who already have one and wouldn't have interest in winning another.

It's not quite as glamorous as going home with a shiny new piece of equipment, but a store credit for BRS might have the most universal appeal.

This is exactly the problem we are having. There are so few things I personally need or want for my tank it's hard to imagine what would get others excited. We are really just looking to see what people would be interested in. If we can get lots of replies to see what sorts of things show up frequently it would give us a good starting point.

Apex.

If I won a tank I'd just sell it for half price. Let's face it, 90 of people hard into the hobby probably don't need another tank and stand.

Everyone always needs salt!

True. Although even with salt a lot of people (myself included) can be pretty picky about which brand they use. Also, $500 worth of salt might be a little excessive;) But if they are going to have some little prizes in addition to the one big one a bucket or two of salt might not be a bad option.

Vortech.

NIB they can be sold for just about retail since they are price fixed.

So either you get it and want it or you get it and sell it. It's all good.

Many people who wouldn't normally spend that kind of cash on a powerhead will feel as if they won the jackpot.

I have 9 Vortechs and if I won a raffle that gave me another one I would still treat it like my little precious!

All these points are valid. I would not do lighting (you are not going to set someone up with a tanks worth) or a tank (most people have no where to put it). But most people can add a powerhead or replace an inferiour one.

The other option I would go for is a large gift certificate to BRS, Marinedepot, Liveaquaria... Personally I would rather win that than anything else.

are you looking for 1 prize with a value of $500? Like a grand prize? What about something like a Radion (I know it's more than $500 but maybe ETM can work with your since it's for a club) or a Kessil or Tunze Powerhead?

Something like a grand prize.

Last year we had:
Frozen Food
AquaC Skimmer
Seney Reef Monitor
BRS RODI
3 Stage RODI
UV Sterilizer
Quiet One Pump
Hydor Powerheads
HOB Filter
Water Jugs
Frag Plugs
and a bunch of chems from SeChem, Ecological Labs, and carib sea.

All in all it totaled over $2500 in prizes. We're just looking for a crown jewel to put on our poster to hopefully drive even more attendance this year.

If you're looking to do an RODI again this year BRS has a really good pre-black Friday sale on RODI units today.

Amazon gift card?

I think this is the better way to go. Or a gift certificate to DRs F&S or some other online store, or even an LFS if you have a good one that is centerally located in your clubs geography.

A few moths ago we gave away a tank, stand, canopy sump and return pump as a grand prize. The person who won it already has 5 tanks and is selling some to downsize. That's just a shame. But everybody who bought $25 in raffle tickets got 1 grand prize ticket as well. Not a well thought out program.:hammer:

Live aquaria gift card would be cool. Such a variety between corals, fish, and inverts. Could go a long way to buy a prized specimen you wouldn't have normally spent that much for.
