Yes, the MOD's tactics are subjective, humiliating and elitist in nature by describing the "requests" of paying members as "pestering" or refusing to reinstate someone's membership because others not involved don't agree with the MODS-we know this to be a constant.

However, almost a year ago I found this thread and I said "Wow, a community that uses each other's knowledge to propagate awareness and prosperity". I was astonished at intricacies of this big eTank.

Yet, one year later, members are banned and the MODs are in full effect over Racism? Over Derogatory comments made between members about something other then their identification of acropora (sp?)?

Please, any who took the time to read my composure, we are a dynamic group of people that are brought to this sea sanctuary because of our passion for the hobby and whilst I am a big advocator of free speech and expression, calling someone racist on a Reef Central Thread... almost as immature as sliencing someone because they don't agree with you. Just ask Stalin.

Thanks for reading... and may each of you have fair wind and following seas.

Hugo,
What you want to do here is admirable, but try to understand that what amounts to pestering the staff here will never get you what you want.
When a member is banned, they are contacted by someone at RC, and they are given a contact email to discuss the situation. As much as you want to help does not change the fact that fixing the mistake is up to the person that made the mistake in the first place.

thanks for your info
but how about the people that were banned how can they be contacted if they cant get loged on to reefcentral thanks for the info

I always find your posts amusing USMCARTY42. If disagreeing with mods was the thing that got people banned, you would have been gone long, long ago. You continually compare the mods and staff to communists in some sort of intellectually-challenged, emotionally-laden attempt to sway others to your viewpoint.

As I have told you before, this is a private forum. We don't have to allow you to express your opinions, period. However, we do want people to be able to exchange information on our hobby, so members are allowed to express their opinions within the constraints of the User Agreement.

BTW, continually trying to pick fights and create problems on RC is a way to have yourself removed.

No Hugo, you don't.

There is a "report this post to moderator" link at the bottom of each post. If a member takes it upon themselves to start swinging, they'll be considered "part of the problem" and will be removed.

Kevin

thanks kevin now i know but you know sometimes wen you are angry you dont think as well and just let it loose cause you didnt think of what you shopuld have done and you do something you shouldnt without knowing cause of the anger you were in no ones perfect

i think its just a temporary ban and he and others will be back..

But I for one applaud the RC staff for their actions...

Guys on here behind their computers tend to say things they normally wouldnt or shouldnt say , and this is especially true when people try to sell something.

GCarrol apologized to his remarks on my thread and I accepted but is posts were now on my thread for good and it just threw the thread off topic.

Hopefully he will learn from his mistakes, hopefully the rest of you that feel you have to put down someone who is selling something for a price you cannot afford, out of your league, or just higher than what it would cost brand new, learn something as well.

As always, the ole saying of "if you have nothing good to say, dont say it at all" will be your best bet... afterall, we are all here trying to help one another out.

I hope the guys get a 2nd chance and learn from their mistakes.

Well since it was my thread that got gcarroll band, I think I should say something. I think that is was unfair that Greg got band but its not my saying. The whole thing went bad when Reefrookie2006(Tony) made the comments about my corals. From there all that Greg did was correct him, then his freind Tetra took over for Tony. We all know that this is what these guys do and it unfortunate that others get banned in the afthermat. I know that only Greg and the mods can setle this. Hope we see Greg back soon.

Kevin,

Thanks for your thoughts.

As I stated, this is a community about sharing knowledge... not your imposition of iron will on others because of some loosely written user agreement-or perhaps your boredom at home.

Maybe if you read my post a bit slower the moral of my story might be more clear, as I am trying to dissuade the fights not "pick" them.

I don't agree with your tactics, but I do agree with your message.... this is about sharing knowledge not insults.

And like everyone else that has posted... I'm expressing that.

Gotta love these discussions, and the accusations tossed around. This is however the first time I remember seeing "elitist" thrown out there. I try my best to maintain order on an Internet BB. I have really one tool at my disposal, the ban button. I guess I am pretty good at using that, but elitist????? I don't see it, and I am sorry if that is what I projected.
In the simplest terms I can find, this is a HUGE board, everyone has to cooperate and behave civilly, or it will be anarchy. That would be the end of Reef Central. We have rules, and they are enforced strictly. That's how it's been, and how it will stay, because it works.
Almost anyone that loses posting privileges here can regain them fairly easily (the first time, at least).

USMCARTY42,
I can't speak for everyone on staff here, but I would find a sudden barrage of PMs and emails asking me to reinstate a banned member "pestering" to say the least (I suppose that would be subject to how many I got, I guess I assumed it would be a lot).
If you guys want to help your friend come back to Reef Central, tell him to contact the person that notified him of his ban. Telling us how much you like him is not going to help.

Perhaps you would like to read your own posts a bit slower? Every one includes either a direct attack or a snide insult directed at the moderation on this board. Perhaps I'm just so bored at home that I find these easily, but nonetheless, they exist.

i think its peaceful elsewhere, just cali....
its gotta be the cheese..lol or the insane gas prices
What everyone seems to forget is that everywhere else it's a club forum. This place is allowed to almost run like the Lounge. My guess is that if this forum continues in the direction it's been taking, it will be shut down, as we have been warned a few times over. If that happens, there will be no general SoCal area, and everyone will have to interact in the general forum, and follow the User Agreement much closer than they are now, which could lead to even quicker banns. If it tries to move to another local club forum, threads will most likely be removed, which could raise even more feelings, which lead to stronger comments, which lead to more banns. We have seen it before, and will likely see it again.

Please think before you post, and re-read your post before you hit the "Submit Reply" button.

Save yourself now! :D

I read that thread, he was not out of line IMO, but then again I'm not a mod.

As someone who moderates 6-7 computer/programming/design forums (as large as 700k members), I can say that quick acting and level headed moderators are generally the most effective in 'large' communities. Allowing petty arguments to continue more than a few posts can cause entire forums to break apart (I've seen it happen over a single stolen element in a webpage design), ruining the community that the owners and moderators have worked so hard to build.

While the ban may not be understood by most members, if it's imposed to calm down the involved parties - a 'time out', as it's been described - it's probably for the best. Regroup, calm down, apologize, and move on.

Evident is a lack of method to report "con" artists in the socal reefer community. I personally would be interested in knowing everyone who didn't pay up, cheated others, etc. However, this would be crazy madness for moderators to control. so what are we to do?

Individuals who give out their experiences in public may be banned or sit quiet and let others continue with their ways. Personally, i think it's in the best interest of the community for people to speak openly.

I also admit that I get some entertainment from all the drama on this board - fun to read and also informative.

RC has an entire forum for just that, Buyer/Seller Feedback

Konadog, thanks for the link. I am aware of the forum, but to be honest, it's not very helpful since most of us can't search (at least at decent hours) and it's not specific to specific (socal) location meaning we have to read through the 105 or so pages. Even then there's things that are discussed in the so cal reefers forum that never showed up there.

why dont the mods close threads like that before it gets to the level that they do?... as soon as a thread starts going bad close it...
