Giesemann Lighting Club.

John,

Thanks for sharing these pics! I am debating between the 160s and the 360s on my next setup. I will be hanging two Kessils next to (on each end) of a Spectra 24" centered on a 42" long tank. I am using the Kessils to take care of the outside shading I'm likely to have with the single MH bulb on a tank this long. I'm not really counting on them for growth as I will focus my SPS in the central 30" of the tank so it sounds like I could get away with two 160s v. 360s. Let me know what you think
Giesemann makes a 36" fixture. not to common here but i know Coralvue had one in where the order was cancelled. they may still have it. Would look great on your tank.

reefcowboy,

i took a quick look at one of your threads and it looks like you are running a combo I'm considering - MH & Kessil combo? Can you talk briefly about your setup (tank size and the lights you are using)? Also how you mounted the lights?

Much Appreciated.

Hi Choss,

You might have seen an older tank pic when I did indeed run the Mh combo with two kessil A160's for blues. The tank had that system running for a year and it did great. My tank is only 36"x18"x20" so I had plenty of light.
The blues from the kessills are awesome IMO.

I did however about 5 months ago venture into the led world and am now running the Orphek V3+. The tank is doing really well with them as well.

Here is the way I had my reefbrite pendant running with two kessills. Unfortunately it is the only pic I still have of the set up.

Yeah this picture was the one that I saw on your thread. I'm debating which Kessil to suppliment with - the 360 WE seems a bit much, the 160s seems about right, and I'm looking at the A80 as well since I should have plenty of par from my MH/T5 combo in the center of the tank.

What makes the Matrixx II superior to the ATI Dimmable SunPower? They're almost the same price, but the ATI is dimmable.

Gmann lights and products have always demanded a premium even if they didn't perform as well or had less "features" overall.

I wouldn't touch dimmable personally. Way too many ballast failures

The most striking difference between Sunpower and Matrix is how they are build. ATI is made of bent sheet metal. Matrix is made from powdercoated aluminum-magnesium extrusions and glass. Powdercoat is a actually very tough.

At this point, Giesemann can no longer source Philips ballasts in sufficent numbers and so they had to switch to the same HEP ballast as ATI, so there is no difference in power output and reliablity vs ATI.

I personally think Matrix is well worth the premium.

If you really want to control your matrix with apex, look at the ballasts. Most just take 0-10v as dim input, if that's the case you can wire them up to apex yourself. It is however possible, they are using the latest Phillips ballasts that communicate with the controller digitally.

Well I would like to yes ;)

I thought they were using HEP ballasts now, It was not they case on your Matrixx ?
I have a non-dimmable matrix. However they may very well be still using Phillips for the dimmable ones. The hardest part for you would be to run a pair of RJ45 cables through the existing cable holes. Look up the pin out for the apex 0-10v RJ-45 and connect those wires to the 0-10v - screw terminals on the ballasts. If I was in your shoes, I would buy the non-dimmable matrix and replace the HEP ballasts with dimmable ones. Th premium you are paying for the dimmable version is the cost of their controller, which you don't want to use. Dimmable 0-10v ballasts are 25-30 bucks a piece, so you could save a couple of hundred going that way

Price difference is not so much between the No DIM and DIM version (150€)
Looking at the ballasts prices and checking good quality ballast they are around 30-40€ so not sure it is the best choice to get the non DIM version and the work needed to install later new DIM ballasts.
I asked Giesemann about which Ballasts they were using on the Matrixx II Dimtec and they are using now the OSRAM Quicktronic QT 2x58 DIM ballasts which has the output 1-10V and they told me that I could connect the light to the APEX.
So I think I'm going with the DIM version and then drill one hole on the frame just next to cable ones to pass the RJ45 cable from the light to the APEX

Ok, if the the difference is only 150 Euro , then its definitely not worth it. In the US, the price difference is almost $500, for 8x54w version. Be careful drilling the hole. The two long extrusions are held together by the glass panel with adhesive.

Hello everyone, I'm not new to ReefCentral, but I am a newbie to the Giesemann forum.

I have a situation.

Back in the 90's I started out with 440 watts of VHO's over my 75g reef. I really liked them and near the end, I removed two tubes and tried a 175w halide, but two months later I gave up the hobby, so my test didn't last long enough.

A year ago, we got back in the hobby, and was surprised that LED's had taken over, with the exception of very large home tanks and public aquariums. So, I bought a "Chinese" box type LED, and then three Maxspect Razors, which are pretty nice, but still has the dreaded "disco affect", and I hate that !

Next, I bought a Kessil 160 for our 29g and now three 360we's for a in wall 125g mixed reef that we're building now. I really like them, but I'm still thinking about the halides for the crisp white light adding either blue T-5's or blue LED's to my liking and for moon light.

I really don't want to fool with a chiller. I spoke with a guy that is selling his 72" with three halides and said he never use a chiller. It's the Hamilton Cebu 6 light with electronic ballest it has 3 12000 k 250watt mogal and 4 t5 all bulbs.

I like the Reef Brite Halide Hybrid.

Then,.....I checked out the Giesemann Spectra, and was in reef lighting Heaven ! :D

I've never been so excited about lighting. Lol.....

Although $1,500 is high for my wife and I, compared to like the EcoTeck, it's actually a good price.

So, the searching is over,.....I only want the Giesemann over my 6' 125g !

Problem is the cost. I had a heart attack in November, so we have a lot of high bills to pay for, but we can't stop the 125g build, we just need to be smart on our buys.

Do any of you have or know someone that has a quality used one ?

Choss,
I has an Elos 160XL prior to this tank. I didn't run the Giesmann on the Elos, I ran the Elos Aquaplanet II fixture as it was designed for that tank. The Elos has been transferred to the Miracle tank above for about 3 weeks now.
I only have the Miracle to take care of and it's enough lol. The tank dimension is 72"x48"x24".

I can't believe that with the halieds and the tubes, that there's shadows ?
I'm setting up a 6' long 125g like you, so I'm a bit disappointed.

I just started looking at this wonderful Giesemann halide lighting, but I don't like the idea of supplicating with another light. Three 250w halides and tubes should definitely, be enough ?

Have you considered Giesemann Verve LEDs? Upfront cost for 3 units is ~$500 more but once you factor in the bulb replacement cost over time its makes allot of sense.

If you are dead set on Halides, it may be easier to find a two used 36" fixtures instead of 60-72".
