Ginger works with ich... Every time I use it

No need to stress the fish like that. Just drop the temps 5 or more degrees in 5 minutes with a large water change using cold water. If you have a blue tang (hippo) or powder blue or powder brown tang in the tank, I can almost guarantee the fish will break out in it.

I said stress it, not belly up :)

If a fish dies from Ich does the Parasite drop off immediately or will it cling to the fish long enough for examination? Do I need to kill a "cured" fish to prove its "cured"? I noticed after killing a deer the ticks and fleas jump off like rats off a sinking ship.

I was thinking about this, and I could actually test this method pretty quickly, but it would be expensive. I have a 210 with Ich. I could buy an Achilles Tang, and use the medicine which gets rid off everything but Ich in the quarantine. Then I could throw him into the main tank while feeding Ginger the entire time. I could turn off my UV for completeness sake, but if I see Ich spots I will turn it back on to prevent a full out outbreak.

The hobby and us all would greatly benefit from a cure for ich that can be used in a reef tank. SO any idea or any success story is of interest to all of us. I appreciate the sharing of knowledge here and I use garlic and still do and maybe it is time to test ginger as long as it does not negatively alter the water parameters etc.. Thanks for sharing to U all

ich doesnt die, it will follow its life cycle ....

again. for everyone on here guessing, why not read about Ich that you doctors are trying to Cure ?

"Trophonts will also actively leave fish that have died, but are not immediately infective. They require additional time to develop from protomonts to tomonts, just as they would if leaving a live host."

Another thought, someone mentioned "living with Ich" perhaps he/she is right, not every parasite survives to get on a fish. That being said, perhaps the best approach is a multi pronged approach. 1 boosting fishes immune system as in ginger or garlic 2 water quality 3 UV sterilization 4 protein skimmer must remove some of the parasite from water column 5 filter feeding animals. Surely this all has an impact on the Parasite population. Living SoCal and growing up with dogs and cats we always battled fleas, my mother would vacuum every day and washed the dogs every week, it was the best way to control them before medications like front line. Thank goodness for that stuff! Maybe in a reef tank it's the same thing keep it as clean as possible, protein skimming, UV, nutrition and filter feeding animals. Maybe all these things together are the answer. Many diseases in humans are fought this way.

this is why we dont use Garlic anymore :

[basically, Garlic long term will hurt fish's Liver]

not sure about Ginger yet though.

but I like your above post, and thats how I go about it. I just control the parasites/bacteria infections ... by reducing detritus in system, removing left over foods, keeping fish FAT via multiple feeding, and ...
a reef tank is sure a much better environment, as many parasitic bacteria or pathogens will be consumed by corals and sponges and ...

Perhaps the reason Ich causes so many problems for new tanks, not enough sponges and other little filter feeders to help keep the balance.

I must be weird cuz I find this Ich problem to be fascinating. There are so many smart people in this hobby and no one has come up with the magic bullet.

You can see they have been working on beating Marine Ich for some time.

Remember, Cryptocaryon irritans is a major PITA for fish farms as well!! Maybe one day they will perfect the vaccine..

"In conclusion, the present invention showed that codon change leads to the expression of parasitic iAg protein in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell systems. It also proved that iAg is immunogenic due to the protection albeit moderate it conferred to the immunized fish. Hence, iAg was a potent DNA vaccine in fish against infection by ciliated protozoan, C. irritans. The finding that marine fish respond to pcDNA3.1-optiAg i.m. injection indicated that iAg could be a promising candidate for DNA vaccine treatment in the disease control caused by C. irritans. The present invention was successful to provide a DNA vaccine that offers promise to develop a highly effective and protective vaccine against C. irritans."

Imagine having to inject every fish with a vaccine. Although! The white sea bass farms here in SoCal inject thousands of fry with a magnetic tag to identify them as hatchery fish, so I guess it's plausible

Seems more reasonable than the current options. Just a quick injection before you put a fish in a tank or quarantine.

They addressed feeding as an option as well

"Plasmid delivery was also an essential step in promoting DNA vaccine-mediated immune response. Many different strategies have been in focus for improved in vivo DNA delivery. These include formulations such as salts, local anesthetics, lipids and sugars, and devices such as gene gun and Biojet. Delivery of antigen by incorporating in fish feeds offers the advantages of being stress free, easy to administer to large number of fish at one time, and inexpensive for the fish farmers. Unlike injection however, it was difficult to determine through oral administration exactly how much vaccine dose each fish consumed and received."

I was talking with a doctor friend of mine about ich, I had him read the sticky on here about ich and then he did a little research on his own, he just called me and said if you cure that you would be looking at a Nobel Peace prize! LOL. His opinion was you would need to find what prays on that in the wild and that would be next to impossible. Just his opinion.

??!!

there are Cures for Ich ... copper, Hypo, CP, formaldehyde, TT ...

your doctor friend is not very well educated it seems, on this subject at least ...
