Go Big OR Go Home! Construction of a 1000 gallon System!!

I added 3 more 2" lines from sump 1 to sump 2, and 2 more 2" lines from sump 2 to sump 3. So, I now have a total of four (4) 2" lines from each sump (1 to 2 and then 2 to 3). I can now turn the recirc. pumps on full throtle and the sumps can flow evenly (just about)! I am real happy with the flow I am getting to my 5 sea swirls. I figure I am getting about 3500 - 4000 GPH across my tank. I can't wait to add the Tunze Streams to the tank. But that will have to wait until the money tree grows a little more!

I have added salt to the system, a grand total of 6 buckets of Tropic Marin Salt!! I have one skimmer running, and all my rock from my old tank is in sump #3, and I have about 6" of sand in sump #2.

Here are some pictures of the system in action!

Looks great...nice DSB!!!:D :D :D

You have got to get a better step-stool. That one is going to kill you. I found one at Lowes or HD that has 3 solid steps and a really good sized shelf with holes for screwdrivers etc. It's got a big hole that I can drop a net into also. It gets me above the tank and gives a good place to set items I am using.

Your tank room ahs really progressed and it all looks great. I am glad you took the trime to add more BHs and the pictures show a nice even level throughout the system.

You've got a huge system and really nice planning. Those white bags you're using in sump #1 are for sediment trapping?

Yep, 100 micron filter socks. Helps remove particles in the water. Especially helps when you first start up a system with all the sand and crap in the water. I usually run the filter socks all the time on my old tank. I will have to see if I do the same with the new tank. I really liked them, they worked great and my water was very clear and clean on my old system.

Ya, I am glad I added the extra bulkheads also, but what a pain in the butt!!!

I am still planning on building a walk-way around the tank so that I can reach into the tank. The step-stool that I have is just for looking into the tank, its way to short for any reaching. I will have to look at getting a larger one until I get the walk-way built!

Looking really good there man .love the big sumps and the big EURO REEF.

But you dont have much room for drop off.

The power goes out how much wateris going to back siphon in tothe sumps.

asmodeus It's deceiving from the picture but that is a lot of surface area. His skimmers won't drain and the overflows are not that big, so I would bet there is plenty of room.

bstone I built a partial walkway but there are so many things to attend to in my tank room that are above my reach like the fuge etc. that I really couldn't do it with just a wrap around walkway anyway. Your room is better suited so you may find that will be enough. I just know that handling sand, water, etc. on a little stool is a recipe for disaster...geez I am getting old. Next thing you know I'll be marking tires at the mall!:D

If the power goes out, or the pumps are turned off, I still have more then an inch of space before the water would overflow the sumps. So, after the water settles out when the power is turned off I still have a good inch. I made sure of that when I filed the tank..

Why the 2nd skimmer B stone

and what skimmer is there the 12-6

They are both RC-1000's. The reason why I have 2 skimmers is because I plan on having a fairly large bio-load (lots of fish) in the system, along with SPS and some LPS. The RC-1000's only get about 700 GPH through them, so I wanted to skim at least 2 times the volume per hour. So, basically redundancy!

why not just get one larger skimmer?

Well, EruoReef doesn't make a bigger skimmer. And other skimmers that are 2x as large cost more then 3x as much. Plus, I would rather have two large skimmers instead of one big one. Also, if something would ever happen to one of the skimmers I would still have one running. So, more bang for my buck!

It makes a lot of sense to do it that way, but it may cost a little more in electricity. I think the safety factor is more important and redundancy is good in such a critical area of the system.

I know you are just getting started with the set up so you're getting extra large amounts of crud from your rock, but how often do you have to change the 100 micron flilter socks?

Just an awsome fish room set up BTW really nice :)

On my old system I would have to change them every week or so. But, this time I got the big filter socks. So, I hope they last longer. But they may not because my flow has increased and so has my system volume compared to my old system when I used the smaller socks.

Thanks for the kind comments!!

I got them from Premium Aquatics. They have the 2 sizes available, both have a draw-string. I think they are both 100 micron.
