Tank looks amazing. :eek1:

Can you post some updated pics of the surrounding wall from the viewing pane. I want to see how you finsihed the wall around the display tank.

The front wall is not finished yet, I still need to put more trim around the tank. I will post some pictures when it is done in about 3 weeks!!

Looks like you have some cyano on the sandbed. I have a similar problem with my 450g tank. Sand-shifting gobies help a lot. May want to consider.

Ya, I am getting some soon. I need some help on the cyano :eek1:

Wow! what a good looking project! Sorry if this is a repeat(I didnt read the entire thread). But do you have a generator incase of a long time poweroutage?

Not sure if I missed it, but with the 42 :p tangs in that tank, I'm wondering how much and what you feed them?

incredible setup!

Right now I have 10 tangs, I might add one more. I feed them nori every day, Spectrum pellets twice a day, and mysis shrimp with garlic/selcon/vitachem once a day.

Its not that bad, for the most part it is mostly automated. Except for once a month water changes, and bi-weekly glass scraping of algae (which I hate the most). The rest of the maintenance is not a problem and takes no time; changing carbon, cleaning skimmers, and feeding fish type things...

how often do you change out the carbon?are you using reactors or bags?

Maintenance is as follows:

Week 1 = change out carbon; change out phos; clean skimmer #1

Week 2 = Clean skimmer #2; check calcium reactor

Week 3 = 150 gallon water change; clean skimmer #1

Week 4 = clean skimmer #2; clean glass on tank

Both carbon and phos are in reactors.
Other maintenance include changing out filter bags every 3 to 4 days. Clean intake screens, hood and bulbs, and a bunch water water tests until everything is stable.

That is a very nice tank! I have really enjoyed seeing it come together. When I build my next house I will definately use your experiences & ideas to build my next tank. Thanks for all the info & pics!

Thanks that helps alot. Im in the process of setting up a 500g and was curious to how often a tank this size needs to be changed out.Another question what type of reactors are you using and are they running off a manifold?Do you have any pics of your setup. How much media do you run? Do you run both carbon and phos. 24/7? Our tank sizes and fish room size are nearly identical,so ive been paying close attention to how you have set everything up,and just wanted to let you know that your setup has really turned out quite amazing.Looking forward to the proggression.

Yo B! I have been toying around with the filter bag issue and for me it is a lot of work. Changing them out every 3 - 4 days and washing them 4 -5 times is a lot of work. I just ordered in some "washable" filter material from Aquatic-Eco and I will post about usig it in my thread. The description says that it can just be rinsed and re-used a few times. The thing about that is I don't want nitrate factories designed "into" my system. :D

I do on average 75g water change each week rather than the larger one like you do, but that is more a function of my holding capacity than any desire to spread it out. Have you looked into any of the constant water change ideas?

I have been using the same filter bags for the last 3 months now. I have 2 sets of filter bags. When I change them out I wash the old set in the washing machine with bleach, then again with just water. I let them air dry before I change them out again with the other set. I have to change them out every 3 to 4 days, so no chance for nitrate to biuld up. Changing them is no big deal with the way I have them setup in the system. It only takes me a few minutes.

I would be interested on the new filter bags you bought, so let me know how it goes.

I have heard about the constant water change, but have not looked into it. Is there a devise that controlls this process?

would the filter bags start to leach things if i waited say two weeks to change them?do you feel it is necessary to change them that often,or are you just trying to stay ahead of the game?

The filter bags would become nitrate factories if you leave them in to long. Also, my filter bags get clogged up in 4 days, so I have to chnage them.
