Green Gigantea odd behavior

So.....I got this beautiful green gig yesterday.

The LFS told me that the batch had arrived to his store the day before. If it was a different color I would have passed because it didn't look too hot.

But bright green gigs are rare nowadays, so I bit the bullet well knowing I would have had to treat it.

Did the usual Septra dosing yesterday and when I went to check on it this morning, the water was a bit cloudy, no dark pellets, but the mouth was gaping wide and looked terrible. I did a 100% WC re-dosed and then I noticed it started elongating in a very odd way.

I realized that somehow air bubbles got inside the mouth and into the oral disk.
Essentially, almost half of the body mass was literally floating, while the ohter half was anchored to the big rock I placed in the tank.

What's even weirder is that I noticed that the gig has 2 sets of feet, it's almost like 2 gigs fused together at the oral disk and stopped half way. I can't show it in a picture, but when I was moving it around I clearly saw 2 distinct and separate feet.

To top it off, when the mouth was gaping wide and elongated, I noticed it had a hole inside the mouth, perhaps 1/4 inch wide and I could see through it!

I was convinced that it was a goner, but a few hours later the air pockets appear to have slightly decreased in volume and the gig is slowly inflating.

It's large, I assume it will be at least 12-14" if fully extended and inflated, so I am switching it to a larger HT.

Now the question.....has anyone experienced anything like this? Air pockets inside the oral disk? The only thing I can think about is that while I was pouring water back inside the tank during the WC, air bubbles went through the gaping mouth. I still feel it's odd cause I am always careful not to splash, but I will use a different way to fill the tank on the next change.

This is how it looked at the LFS....not too bad, but really.....placing a gig on coral fragments is dumb. I must have removed at least 20 pieces from under its foot.

After I put it in the HT it was still dropping little coral fragments.

This is after the first WC this morning...it looked terrible, plus the air pockets were stretching it towards the water surface.

That's the hole I mentioned.

After the WC and an hour later, it began inflating, but a portion of it's body is still floating.

Here's a shot from above so you can clearly see the air pockets keeping it afloat.

I had to transfer it to a larger HT as once it began expanding I was way too large for the 5g tank. Now it's in a 10g. New WC + dose.

Still floating....

Here you can see the double column and 2 feet one on each side of the rock.

Better view of the air pockets.

Is it possible the powerhead has been sucking air. It looks pretty close to the surface in one of the first pics?

You could try removing the gig and its rock from the water for several minutes. They get exposed during low tide in the wild and may allow anemone to expel any air.

i swear a few months ago I read the same thing happen. They took a small pin to poke a hole to release the air. I thought it was successfully. Search it first to make sure

I removed it earlier, once it started expanding because it grew at least 5 times in size compared to yesterday and I mistakenly placed it in my 5 gallon cube HT. Once I removed it from the 5g cube into the 10g I thought that exposing it to air and pulling it out of the water would do the trick. I think some air might have gone out, but there are still several areas floating. I think once I do more 100% WC's the next few days it might expel the rest, at least I hope.

Funny thing you mention it, cause that's what I tried this morning with a sewing needle, thinking of it like popping a blister, however the tissue is so slimy that the needle can't penetrate the layer. In the end I gave up as I didn't want to upset it further more.

Took a couple more pics a few minutes ago.

i dont recall ever seen anything like it, this is the first. Lets hope he will recover and be healthy, nice nem.

The exposed powerhead has me squirming in my seat. Cover that puppy up before is starts moving and you end up with anemone soup!

I've had carpets get air bubbles in them before. They usually work out on their own over a few days.

The air pockets are less, but still present, making those parts of the oral disc float.

Following the usual protocol, but it's hard to tell how it is doing. I am using a combination of septra and cipro and I am doing two 100% water changes a day. Having gone through the process over a dozen times, the chances of survival are slim, but you never know. It is still very responsive when I touch it with the turkey baster and tentacles are sticky.
I'll post new images tomorrow.

I got a jump on this guy and will get him next week. Wednesday

i dont think you should change the water twice a day, unless he stress spawn and make the water dirty and cloudy.........

That's exactly what it's been doing....after a few hours the water is cloudy, so that's why I have been doing 2 WC in the past 2 days. Hopefully tomorrow I can just do 1.
