griss’ Battle with Cyano - all the Things I’ve Tried

Interesting note, since I started dosing NO3, my R. Florida are starting to look really good.

Freaking Cyano coming back with a vengeance for no apparent reason🙄.

While out getting a new bucket salt (decided I’m going to switch to IO since no one has Coralife in stock) I remembered a spare 5 gallon I have and decided I would drill it when I got home to create a refugium for the tank. When I got home, got out the 1/2 bulkhead I planned to use and went to get my diamond hole saws. When I opened the drawer I keep them in, one is missing, guess which one. Yep, the 32mm I needed. Ordered a new one that should arrive this week.😂

Got the hole saw this week and decided to do a little work on the fuge.

Prepped the tank and set up to drill. Drilling was successful😀. Tested the fit of the bulkhead and I’m good there.

Because of these odd bulkheads I have and the limited types of PVC fittings at HD, I had to improvise on the “overflow.”

After I got it drilled, I decided I wanted to paint the back and sides. So, now I have to wait 24 hrs for the paint to dry.

Also, I thought I had some 1/2” PVC at home so, I didn’t get any at HD. Guess what? Yep, no 1/2” PVC at the house😂

Once the paint is dry, I’ll need to clean the interior of the tank. I’m still trying to figure out exactly where I’m going to place this but, I’m making progress.

Have you tried Chemiclean?
It works.
Yes, back on November 25th. It didn’t completely knock out the Cyano, but significantly reduced it. It’s since come back.

I’ve been adding 3 mL of the ESV NO3 for a while to feed Cyano competitors.

Test results today.
Alk 9.3
Ca 450
Mg 1400
NO3 10
PO4 0.04

So, the NO3 and PO4 are a bit on the high end of being ideal.

Did a 5 gallon water change.

Also of note, on Jan 24 I added an initial dose of Microbacter Clean 48 mL. I’ve been adding 8 mL of Microbacter Clean daily since.

Since starting the regimen I’m getting a lot more skimmate (as expected) that is more clear in color than before I started dosing the MB Clean.

Oh, forgot to mention I’ve been dripping 10 oz of weak Kalk (1TBS/gallon) each night for about a week.

Got the stand for the little fuge built and in place, got the fuge in place, got the powerhead and supply line in place, but the return line (vinyl tubing) to the sump keeps kinking. Threw it in some hot water and trying to work the kinks out.

@Nanook is bringing me some macros on Tuesday.

One (multiple frags) I’m pretty sure is a Blue Slimer. The other is a Copps Turquiose Hoeckzema.

Very nice!!!
Yep, Nook has some really nice Acros…when his Angel doesn’t eat them. I like to think I taught him all he knows. But, the last several years, his tanks are looking great and mine looks like crap.

Fuge up and running waiting for the @Nanook visit with macros Tuesday. It’s not the prettiest, but it’s functional and only need to last until the upgrade is ready.

Debating sand or miracle/mineral mud in the fuge. Nanook has miracle mud and said no miracles have happened yet😂
