griss’ Battle with Cyano - all the Things I’ve Tried

Thinking on it now, another thing I’ve noticed with this batch of salt is, over the course of 2-4 mixings for water changes, a tan/brown film builds up inside the bucket. Haven’t had that with previous batches. I actually have to scrub this film out of the inside of the bucket. Ca buildup???

Strange I'm having the exact same issue with my latest bucket of Red Sea Coral Pro. Previous several buckets were crystal clear. I hates the brown sludge. Not noticing any big 3 level shenanigans though.

Hmmm…

Okay, tested the tank water for Alk with the expired kit (haven’t gotten the new kits yet). 8.4 dKH.

Tested the bucket of water I mixed last night and added 25 mL of BRS Alk to. 9.1 dKH. Noted also that the water in the bucket was still very cloudy white. Since I was just using it as an experiment, I dumped it out. Powerhead and heater that were in there were covered in white residue (Ca precipitate?). The inside of the bucket looked like this.

I cleaned the bucket, powerhead and heater and am mixing a new batch from a different bucket of salt mix, different batch number than the one I was using and will test that.

Prefacing this that I am still using the expired tests waiting on new ones.

Old batch of salt newly mixed yesterday =
5 dKH
Ca 820 ppm

Opened a new bucket and mixed some salt =
9.1 dKH
572.5 ppm Ca
1200 ppm Mg

So, assuming those tests are accurate, I had a bad batch of salt.

Doing a water change with the new batch of salt. Maybe that’s why I’ve been able to keep the impossible to keep Mermaids Cup algae. I’ve noticed it dying off with the increase in alkalinity recently.

Can’t wait to get the new kits (Alk and Ca), Friday and Saturday. Here’s today’s readings.

dKH 5.6
Ca 700
Mg 1400
NO3 2
PO4 0.04

Got my “new” Salifert Ca test kit from eBay today. The measuring spoon is missing and the syringe tip. In addition, the reagent 2 bottle is supposed to have a dropper top and it doesn’t.

The shipping box was fine, the the Salifert box was all smashed up inside. Requesting a return and ordering elsewhere.

Since (if expired test kits are accurate) upping my Alk, the Caribbean stonies on my rock, especially the Porites are going crazy. Assume the stonies growing will help lower the crazy high Ca.

The tank overall is looking so much better despite the Cyano coming back a bit. Another note is I’m having what I believe is calcium carbonate building up on the glass. It’s a white film that can only be removed with a razor blade.

Today’s readings/
dKH - 5.9 4-month expired reagents
Ca - 450 ppm 3-month expired reagents
Mg - 1400 ppm 4-month expired reagents
NO3 - 2 ppm

I continue dosing Alk (soda ash) daily. If the test kits are still accurate, I believe this is slowly bringing dKH up and Ca down.

New dKH kit should arrive today. The calcium kit I ordered last night to replace the defective kit I got has not shipped. Here’s a picture of the build up I’m getting on the glass

After posting those results, I started slowly dripping 3 oz soda ash to the tank and left for a dentist appointment. When I got back, the new Salifert Alk kit was here. Just tested and result is 8.45 dKH.

I’ll be interested to see what the new Salifert Ca kit says when I get it.

New calcium test kit was supposed to arrive today, but appears to still be 5 hours away in Chicago.

Today’s results:

dKH
6.8 new Salifert kit
6.3 expired Red Sea kit

Ca
385 expired Red Sea kit

NO3
0-1 new Salifert kit

Mg
1,400 expired Red Sea kit

Added 3oz BRS soda ash and 4 mL ESV NO3.

Also, no more of the white build up on the glass and the Mermaids Cup is slowly receding.

Don’t think I’ll be getting the new Ca test kit today.

Did a 5 gallon water change with the new salt mix.

Stopped using the expired kits. Today’s numbers.

dKH - 10.0
NO3 - 2 ppm

Adding 3 mL ESV NO3, not adding soda ash tonight.
