Halide Q & A

I have 2-250W MH on my reef tank. I've been looking at the new AI 26 Led's. After getting controllers and mounting brackets I'm looking at about 1000 bucks. Is there really enough difference to justify going with the LED's?

Sure, in 5 years if your LEDs haven't either burned out or died entirely, and you opt to never upgrade to a new model, you may break even on cost. Some serious savings there...

Hello all,

I'm about 5 months in using my Hamilton e ballast along with a Phoenix 14K DE 150 watt. As it burned in it of course got whiter. I'm not completely satisfied with the color and still in search of a more blue bulb. I'm looking for suggestions for a 20K bulb, thanks!

I'm in the same boat. The corals are happy but I'd like to see a bluer spectrum than my Phoenix 14k.

On a related note, what's a good 96W PC actinic to go with the MH?

Looking to buy a different light for my 120 gallon 48x24x24 sps tank. I currently run an ATI 8 bulb sunpower. I would like to try running halides for better growth and color. I am looking into light in the link above and run 20k radiums with blue and actinic ATI bulbs. Any thoughts opinions would be appreciated. I see all these Beautiful radium tanks and they have excellent growth and color. Thanks. Jeremy.

That fixture boasts the convenience of being an all in one, but I think you may get better coverage and higher par with separate pendants like lumenmax elites or something similar. You're definitely on the right track with the ballasts though. Radiums on m80 ballasts with true actinic bulbs are as good as it gets for color

So do you think par values would be comparable with the t5 and halides with my ati? With my current bulb combo on bottom of my tank par values are 230-280. I try to keep all acros in the 300-400 range.

Looking for a reflector recommendation on my 200 gallon 72 x 30 x 24 build. I picked up two big lumenarc 3 reflectors from a local reefer that got out of the hobny, and I'm wondering what I could use for the middle to fill in any gaps left by the Lumenarcs. I plan on running 400 watt XM 20k bulbs.

If I could still buy a Lumenarc 3 new, I would, but I can't find a source! I've been leaning towards one of two options: using a 250 watt Hamilton Cayman Sun reflector that I already have, or getting a new Lumenmax Elite that I was able to find a source for.

Looks like the Hamilton Sun Cabo reflector is nearly an exact match in terms of dimensions and shape. The only difference is that Hamilton has changed a couple of the facets to be a hammertone material. So this is the option I'm going to go with, in case anyone else finds themselves in this position in the future :).

@jeremyB i will run 400w se radium with those.. Are they proper and correct?? Osram ( that is owner of radium germany) give me for sure.

The ballast in the picture (OSRAM NV400-01/230V) is similar to the PFO HQI 400 watt ballast we have in North America. That Osram ballast is designed for 4.0-4.4 amperage rated lamps. This will overdrive the Radium lamp providing more light output with decreased usable lamp life.

The recommended ballast by Radium is an OSRAM Q400-02/230V or Q400-SI/230V ballast with a superimposed 4kV minimum lamp ignitor. This ballast is designed for 3.25-3.5 amperage rated lamps. This ballast will operate the Radium 400-watt lamp to spec.

i'm preparing fixture..

Good to hear guys.. Tomorrow will burn lamps first time to see if work all properly., ;)

I want to try Radiums. I am looking at purchasing 2 Lumenarc reflectors, 2 250 watt Radiums, and my question is with ballasts. M80's aren't for sale anymore.
Which one of these ballast are my best choice:
1. Lumatek switchable 250-400 watt
2. Luxcore 250-400
3. Hamilton Magnetic 250watts
4. are there a better choice with what's still out there that are for sale?

Another question, do the 400 and 250 watt moguls have the same socket size?

How do you guys deal with hot ballast? I am using 400 watt ballasts and they get pretty hot. Should I keep them off the carpet floor? What material should I use between them and carpet?
