Have you ever been badly stung by your anemone?

Has anyone been stung by their anemone, where it caused an allergic reaction beyond a skin rash? I purchased a very large S. gigantea this past weekend. I wear rubber gloves when handling my anemones, but in this particular case, the anemone was so large that it managed to sting me quite a bit on my forearm that wasn't covered. I experienced a painful rash, that later become itchy. This has happened to me before, so I thought nothing of it and treated it with a topical ich medication.

Aside the the typical rash, has anyone experienced other symptoms, such as shortness of breath, feeling lethargic, and/or high/low blood pressure? I was doing some casual reading online and many articles compare anemone stings to jellyfish stings, with potency and severity of the reaction based on species and person's own immune system.

The reason I ask is because while not severe, my left arm -- the one that was stung -- feels unusually "heavy" as if my body is having a harder time moving it. My breathing is also slightly labored, as if I'm having a minor asthma attack. It could be coincidence, but I was wondering if anyone else has been stung by their anemone and experienced similar symptoms.

As a nurse, I can tell you that you should go to the ER. Anemone stings are akin to Bee stings and can be dangerous in certain individuals. Your symptoms are more than a minor reaction.

Apart from a little rash, numbness, and a tad dizzy for maybe an hour no. Your case sounds pretty serious.

Thanks for your concern, guys. It happened this past Sunday, so I'm not too concerned as the symptoms seem to be fading. I just came to realization today that how I was feeling and the anemone stinging me could be related.

Anything different go on recently? Stress? You in good health? Smoke?

Well, stress as a result of trying to acclimate two gigs.

I'm in decent health, and I don't smoke. The wife says I need to exercise more though.

Don't we all *pats gut that recently popped up*
Yeah I'd guess an allergic reaction. But if you don't get better soon make her drag you to the doctors.

Its different for everyone. I propagate anemones a lot and i had a huge cut going down my wrist and the anemone (bubble tip) stung the heck out of me. An hour later we ended up going to the hospital cause it seemed like i was having a allergic reaction to it. My whole are ended up getting red bumps on it ( only my arm ) and so they gave me a shot, and then an hour later i was fine and went home. Otherwise ive never got stung by anything else.

Local rash is one thing, systemic reactions can become very serious, including closing of airways. The next time, could even be worse with faster onset of symptoms.

Benadryl...

Racmic epi in breathing treatment for stridor if airway is closing up.

If you have problems breathing, give me a pm and I can tell you what to do.

Respiratory Therapist here and nurse above, we'll take care of you D-Nak! :-)

She can start the IV and get some steroids going and I'll get ur breathing treatment firing and draw a blood gas. Then I can take a look at your ventilation/oxygenation status.

If things get too bad, we'll hollar for Minh and follow orders from there... Lol

i wanna see pictures.....not to enjoy everyone's misfortune, naivety, or deserved outcome due to negligence, but for educational reasons, really.

thanks....that worked. i was hoping more for a bit of people off here. i know it happens.

im glad you are recovering well, just kinda funny sometimes when nothing serious happens.....and of course, that depends on how we interpret the definition of "serious"

Sorry I don't have an answer but I can't seem to post from my profile and I'm in desperate need of help. My poo blue hippo tang was stung by my green long tentacle anemone and I was wondering if anyone can offer some advice on how to help her

Pics? How badly stung, big area? Symptoms?

I don't have pics and I've just stepped out to get some stuff for the tank. She's a little better than yesterday but still won't swim around and still breathing a but rapid. She was covered in slim like when we got her out

Main worry is getting the fish to heal, clean water, well fed and most likely antibiotics to keep the wound from becoming infected.
