i want a yasha (sp) goby so bad but i have a open tank and i heard goby's are jumpers. should i chance it? all my fish i am going to have are peacefull. and my tank is 18" high. i use to have a yellow watchman goby in a 14 gallon tank i had him for a couple of months and he never jumped out

My YWG has gone sump diving 3 times in the last 2 years. He normally spends his time at the bottom but can get spooked when something major changes in the tank. I woudln't risk it w/o some sort of top cover. Clear screen with window screen frame from home depot works well.

I had a hi-fin red banded shrimp goby jump over the back wall of my biocube.

They do jump occasionally.

Use plastic needlepoint canvas to shield intakes and other escape points. Use gutterguard in low spots around your precautions. And make a removeable fake rim, 9" high around your tank with fiberglass or other such, which really stops jumpers.

That said, little fish jump when they find an upwelling current leading them to an adventure---or when there are big fish that can unexpectedly corner or startle them: then most fish will jump. A peaceful tank has a very low incidence of jumping. A tank with ample hideyholes in the rocks, ditto.

I've had a 2 diamond gobies jump out the first day. A dragon goby after four days. A yellow headed goby after 2 days. I did have success with a yellow headed goby I kept for a few years. The rest have all committed suicide. No longer trying to keep them and it's too bad since they keep the gravel so clean.

had clown goby end up inside the body of my cone skimmer
still not sure how he ended up in there
took me 10 minutes to get him out the whole time he was in the sink out of water
but he is alive today

I had my Diamond Goby jump out in the middle of the night and I heard it hit the floor. But it jumped out again after I was knocked out. My wife found it in the morning.

Thank you t4zalews and wrestle1952
It helps a lot when more details is given, instead of my fish jumped.... Okay.... what's the distance???? since there is soooo many types of tanks now a days. :) Now, I do understand there is rock height... Which my Gobies do love to hang out high on on top ( At least the yellow clowns do). But some of these fishes I was curious. Deep tank or not???

Thanks Again :)

I can't keep firefish, even w/ fiberglass screens they jump onto the overflow cover and I find them nicely baked. I believe my Potters' angel is the culprit. But gobys that stay on the bottom do OK.
What Sk8r says is the way to go. It's just not worth putting in the time and effort if you give your fish a way to jump out. You could have any fish for years and one day find it on the floor if you don't cover your tanks.

I had a diamond goby i put in at around 6mp by 7am the next day he had jumped out, found him all dried out and stuck to the floor so he must've jumped out pretty early maybe around 1 or 2

For these fish that have jumped out. What is the depth of your tanks?

When they are spooked they will go from any tank's bottom to the top in a fraction of a second.

The only way to avoid this is luck, or a cover/screen.
